Re: NBA 2011/2012 Season

It was the way he phrased the question. He kind of butchered the typical loaded question. He should have said "Do you beat your wife?". But what he said was "Do you still beat your wife?" which implies that he already has.

If he wanted to say something ridiculous, he should've said "Do you kill puppies" "Do you steal from girl scouts", not something about beating your wife.

See, herein lies the loaded part. Because he added still, he was insinuating that Rome had done it in the past.

The classic question is "when did you stop beating your wife?" It's supposed to be answerable, but only if you basically ignore the question. Stern made the mistake in implying that asking if the draft is fixed was a trap question or impossible to answer effectively, which it's not.

Right, I don't think he actually meant to do that though. I think he meant to ask Rome "do you beat your wife?" because Rome would be insulted and find the question ridiculous (which is how Stern felt about Rome's question). But his insinuation that Rome had already beaten his wife made it that much worse. Especially for people who hear just a clip out of context and don't understand what he was trying to do.

Stern was/is convinced even answering the question honestly will be considered a lie or unbelievable to some people, which was the point of him saying if the Bobcats win, it's because he's friends with MJ, etc.

Were people seriously insulted that Stern mentioned Rome's wife? Have people not heard that classic lawyer line before?

Yea, but he could have just explained how the lottery works. He's finding ways around explaining the process which is stupid. It's not like it's a huge secret.

Exactly. I'm a little shocked the NBA came out and defended it for this reason actually. Puts Stern in a really bad light.

By the way, can't take credit for Stephen Naismith, regardless of how hilarious it is. Saw it on /r/nba the other day.

Some of you aren't getting the classic "Do you still beat your wife?" question. Here's the wiki entry on a loaded question:

    Quote:
A loaded question is a question which contains a controversial or unjustified assumption, e.g., a presumption of guilt.[1]

Aside from being a logical fallacy, such questions may be used as a rhetorical tool: the question attempts to limit direct replies to be those that serve the questioner's agenda.[2] The traditional example is the question "Have you stopped beating your wife?" Whether the respondent answers yes or no, he will admit to having a wife, and having beaten her at some time in the past.
If he would have asked "do you beat your wife?" he would be messing it up. He actually did it correctly, it just seems many people aren't aware of that rhetorical tool so they think Rome actually beat his wife now.

This. A lot of people are missing the fact that Stern didn't invent this question on the spot. If you ask "have you stopped beating your wife," regardless of what the person says back, they technically won't be answering the question.

But that implies that Stern thinks that "is the draft fixed" is a loaded question, which it isn't. It's an unfair or leading question, but isn't loaded or unanswerable. In fact, he did answer with a "no," but could have easily backed up his claim. He just chose not to.

Yea I'm not sure where it came from. Wherever it was it's funny. I never watch First Take though so that's probably why I've never heard it.

And let me guess, Skip Bayless picked the Heat to win the Finals.

Yes. But, to be fair, he picked them before the season started.

Of course he did. But he's also sure to make his distain for LeBron very public so he can be a winner regardless of what happens. He did the same thing with Tebow.

I think Skip's criticism of Lebron is merely a caricature of the truth. I think he's pretty close to accurate a lot of the time. Does he over-do it? Yes, much of the time. But, Skip is simply the loudest voice of the Lebron non-ballwashers.

In my opinion, very few people (critics/analysts) are completely objective about Lebron. You either speak glowingly of his talents and gloss over his weaknesses, or you consistently berate him for his mistakes and gloss over the great things he does. Skip just happens to be the latter. There are plenty of the former who don't get shit for their opinions. At least Skip stands behind what he says. I'll give him that.
