Essential DMBLive

Which DMBLive shows have you purchased that you would say are essential for fans to own? Which would you skip? What are your favorites?

The D&T one from 3.3.99 is the best. Essential for any fan, imo.

1.27.93 is a personal favorite of mine. 93-94 in general too, just really solid.

Appalachian State and Benaroya are the only two that I own from the series and I've always listened to them. I feel like you would have to be a pretty big fan as most of us are to appreciate Appalachian State, it is very mellow between songs and doesn't sound like some big produced Radio City type of release. That being said Bartender, Grey St, PFWYG, LIOG, Crush, Cry Freedom, #41 and Nancies are all great versions. The thing that stands out to me with Benaroya is Dave's guitar playing, there are plenty of example of him playing the same songs but more just keeping time for either Tim or the band, here he is constantly doing little fills and mixing things up. Favorites off of Benaroya are FTT, Nancies, Too Much, Raven, IBYU, Jane, and Watchtower is crazy. I don't own Prism Coffeehouse but used to listen to it when grooveshark.com had streaming music and I love that one too.

    Re: Essential DMBLive

That Tampa '94 show is absolutely stunning, possibly the best sounding release DMB have done to date. The Academy and Palace NY shows from '95 and The Bayou show '92 also get good rotation in my list.

I think one of the biggest draws for me is in general the DMBLive series leaves the performance's dynamics intact, there was some ugly mastering in the early stages but the Oak Mountain (vol. 15) and Memphis, VA shows (vol. 17) were the last ones, since then they've all been excellent from that perspective.

The Madrid show I could do without, I get why it was released, but can't say I'll ever listen to it again.

2.25.95 is an all around AMAZING show. Great performances throughout and an incredible Blue Water that is the last full length, full band, fully jammed out version of this song. I mean Water Into Wine into Blue Water....
Wish the band would stun us more like this.

    1995.04.05. The Academy
    1999.03.03. Kingsbury Hall (D&T)
1995.02.25. Kirby Fieldhouse (Probably my favorite. Best Water/Wine Jam)
2002.10.24. Benaroya Hall (The best Dave solo show IMO)
    1995.04.07. Cameron Indoor

    Benaroya is an essential release.

It's arguably the best Dave solo show there is along with the DKE House gig in '92.

That's one hell of a set, should release that or one of the solo shows from Europe 2006

A lot of them are starting to blend together for me, those early shows had pretty repetitive sets (gasp)...but Benaroya is essential, and the ones with Peter are pretty neat.

I think the Academy release would be my first choice. Such a unique show, and still a full set. The mellowness of the evening really made for some intimate and great performances. You can hear Carter and Boyd on the harmonies really well, and the mix is fantastic.

Dave and Tim 99 is a tough one to not get. I think the tapes from that era are pretty good, but for an official release it's definitely worth it.

The Warfield show is another good one. The mix is a bit hollow, but the performances are great.

Annnnd Irving Plaza. I dig this show very much too.

I would go with any of these four, plus the aforementioned Beneroyal Solo show. I never bought it because I have a great taper pull and listened to it 100 times, so there would be nothing new for me in buying it. But still highly recommend if you have not heard it.

Agreed! There are like 6-8 shows from this fall run that would be great releases.

I am curious how the sound is.

I would presume the show WAS multitracked and the multitracks are not in usuble condition, either part of the show is lost, entire show is lost, any number of reasons but I wouldn't think in '98 they suddenly made a conscious decision NOT to record the multis.
