Sad thinking about the shows I went to in July 2008 when Dave talked about how Roi would be blowing with them again soon. Wish I could see just one more Ants Marching with LeRoi.

Found this on Reddit, really interesting read:

"I am finishing a doctorate in jazz studies and my dissertation is a biography of LeRoi. He has long been a hero of mine, and I'm really excited about this project. I have interviewed a ton of people, including Butch Taylor, John D'earth, Jamal Millner, and a lot of other great guys around Charlottesville.
I am writing a blog that documents this process and is a little more personal than the dissertation. I'm trying to get it some more attention and get more information about LeRoi out there. To me, he was an unknown titan of American music and that's what I'm calling my dissertation.
I have lectured about LeRoi at several conferences with hopefully a few more coming up. Please check out the blog and ask questions!

I'm definitely going to check this out. Aside from being a stunningly brilliant musician, Roi was also one of the smartest, and one of the funniest people I've ever met. He knew so much, and could tell a story like no one's business. I hope that also came out in your research. Looking forward to reading what you've got over there (hopefully this weekend). Cheers!

I just jumped over to your site (cuz I'm being bad and surfing the net instead of working!) and since you're looking so in-depth at LeRoi, when I get a chance which I hope I do in February, I'm gonna go to my storage space and try to dig out some journals. My most precious memory of LeRoi was one ride, probably in '02 or '03, where I caught a ride to a Hartford show with him on his tour bus (this was early into the band members mostly each having their own bus) and he did something that NO BAND I have ever known ever did (but he had a reason): he listened to DMB songs for about 90 min of the ride. It was mostly # songs and BTCS songs like Dreaming Tree that he said they were planning to start playing more of again and he needed to listen to the sax parts to get primed again for playing them. I can't really explain the ridiculous honor and privilege it was to spend 90 min watching (out of my sideeye, cuz of course I couldn't just sit there and stare at him!) one of the greatest sax players ever in the world listening to his own brilliant work and talking a bit about it, and also just the joy of being on the way to see DMB live and getting to do what we fans do all the time but bands never do: listen to favorite DMB songs as you roll down the road to the show!

I'm not a musician so if I did write it all out (which I think I did in a journal) it probably won't have any technical info in it. But I'm sure it would be a bit enlightening to hear what he was saying about the songs or what they triggered for him if I did indeed write it all down. I'll look for it for sure!
