Yeah he played several of his DBT hits: Outfit, Decoration Day, Danko/Manuel, Goddamn Lonely Love, Never Gonna Change. He did a good job of mixing in his older solo work with the new album tunes as well. They did a pretty mean cover of Pyscho Killer too.

Jason still does a lot of his DBT work with the 400 Unit. I have to say I am surprised that no one has come in here to write a review or at least any thoughts on Jason's new album. Since I bought the album on Tuesday it has received non-stop play from me. I think this is by far his best solo effort. Feels like his most complete album and I believe that is saying a lot considering how great Sirens was and how good the self titled album was. Here We Rest as an album doesn't have a weak song, and any song preceived to be weak will grow on you. The first four tracks are his best opening run. Each one is a home run in their own way. Alabama Pines and Go It Alone have hit me hard since I am living overseas and do want to go home, so songs about going home are really sticking with me at the moment as I finish up my last few months over here. The rest of the album is great though. I love Daisy Mae and Never Could Believe, which I believe is a song that will get stuck in your head the first time you listen to it. Completely unlike anything Jason has done before and they all completely nail it.

First album of the year candidate for me. Better than Go-Go Boots in my mind. Muscle Shoals really is seeing a revival of prominent bands and music being made in the area again-although I'm not really sure it ever left.

The title track from Go-Go Boots is so fucking awesome.

Re-visiting the album today after about a month off. It still sounds fresh. I notice I need to be in the right mood for Go-Go Boots though, whereas with almost any other DBT album I can throw it on at any time and just love it.

Go-Go Boots is a great "late night with nice headphones and a joint" album.

I think this is a great little collection. I do wish DBT would release another live album. The Austin City Limits release I just feel does not grasp them in the correct light. A nice live vinyl would be an amazing addition from them.

I feel the same way - the Austin City Limits disc just does not capture that real, raw, dirty, sweaty, adrenaline soaked vibe of a 'real' Truckers show. I'd love to get a double disc live album out of them. 'Alabama Ass Whuppin'' is good too but of course pre-dates all of their best material.

I've been listening to 4/9/10 from Chicago A LOT lately - that was my first DBT show and it was pretty damn epic.

So who's gonna try and get down front for DBT at the Chicago Caravan? I know I'll never get front row for DMB, so I'm hoping to at least do it for the Truckers. Hopefully we'll get word soon with when/where/how long they're playing.

Holy shit did DBT ROCK at the Chicago Caravan! Such a fantastic set - I knew when they opened with 'Lookout Mountain' that we were in for a good one. Only an hour, but they brought it hard. My friend Adam and I met up with Jason (jayman414) and his group right after Soulive finished - the stage cleared out and we were right down front and dead center. Had to sacrifice a good spot for DMB that night, but WELL worth it.

Sounds like the tape is up for the DBT set - can't wait to check it out.

I was disappointed in the crowd that they had though. The best band at the Fest and no one even knew it. It did fill in quite a bit about 5-10 mins before they started, but I think the fact that BlowAR was playing on the other stage at the same time + people heading over to get a spot for DMB really hurt their crowd. All the discussion over in DMBc about what bands people saw and I haven't seen a single person mention seeing DBT.

Yoooooo! Alex, it's jasons friend Dan.

So glad we got to rock out at DBT together. I had a freaking blast. First time ever seeing these guys, and honestly had barely listened to them before also.

They really put on a hell of a show.

We'll have to try and get a group together the next time DBT comes to the area for a 'proper' show.

I didn't realize until almost halfway through the show that the bassist was a chick she's fucking good! She sang on one song also, was pretty awesome.

Dancing Ricky. Her songs are consistently the worst songs on DBT albums and it is a shame they replaced Jason's. God I miss Isbell.

I would either go one back to Southern Rock Opera, or move onto the next on after DD, 'The Dirty South'. Both are absolutely stellar. I think I remember you said 'Southern Rock Opera' was a little much all at once, so in that case I'd go to 'Dirty South' next.

Enjoy!! PM if you need sum.

Dancing Ricky was the only tune I would've taken out of that setlist. Even though 4/12 were from Go-Go Boots, they were the 2 best tracks (the title track and Used to Be A Cop) and I really enjoy Cartoon Gold as well. During the show it didn't *feel* so Go-Go Boots heavy, but I guess when you look back at it, it was 1/3 of the set!

Downloading the set from the Chicago Caravan right now....stoked to re-live that, such a blast. Also, a couple of thoughts while spinning some various DBT the last few days:

    1. I *love* The Big To-Do. I know it wasn't a favorite amongst a lot of longtime fans, but for the life of me I can't figure out why.
    2. John Neff and Jay Gonzalez are the band's secret weapons and don't get nearly enough credit for their contributions. Neff, in particular plays such a HUGE role.

Glad to see they didn't shaft Isbell on this. Might have to pick this up on vinyl.

Watching The Secret To A Happy Ending makes me more upset that Shonna replaced Jason's contributions to the albums. He is missed in the band.

Agree...but I am glad that he can do his own thing now. I thoroughly enjoy his new stuff and am fortunate that he tours my area quite often. He puts on a great show and is incredibly talented. I did hear that his other lead guitarist, Browan Lollar, left the band though (which sucks because he was a great guitarist as well).

    Re: **Official Drive-By Truckers Thread**

Allmusic.com's review of the new greatest hits record:

With their decidedly goofy name and album titles like Gangstabilly and Pizza Deliverance, it wasn't hard to read the Drive-By Truckers as a joke band early on, especially given their workmanlike but often unfocused mixture of Replacements-style slop and Lynyrd Skynyrd-influenced Southern rock, even if the occasional fine song suggested they had the potential for greater things. It wasn't until 2001's Southern Rock Opera that the DBTs finally managed to hit upon the right formula and began writing, singing, and playing like the great hard rock band they wanted to be as they pondered the political and cultural legacies of life in the Deep South. Once they finally cracked the code, they bacame one of the most consistently satisfying American bands of the new millennium, delivering a string of smart, impassioned albums that prove a band can be smart, hit hard, and speak with an accent at the same time. Between 2003 and 2008, the Drive-By Truckers recorded four studio albums for New West Records, and those albums provide the backbone of Ugly Buildings, Whores and Politicians: Greatest Hits 1998-2009, a compilation that offers an efficient overview of their career before jumping ship to ATO Records in 2010. While this collection offers one selection each from the DBTs first two studio albums (including "The Living Bubba," their first genuinely first-class song), this album really kicks into gear with "Ronnie and Neil" from SRO, and from then on it delivers a track listing not necessarily devoted to fan favorites or the group's most accomplished material, but to tunes that might well have been hits in an era where bands like this still got played on the radio, and in this context "Marry Me," "The Righteous Path," "Outfit," and "3 Dimes Down" sound like they should be blasting out of your car stereo right now. The album also allows the personalities of the group's three primary songwriters of this era to shine through -- Patterson Hood and his tales of decent folks living under hard times, Mike Cooley's wicked, often funny and sometimes bitter stories of rednecks long on pride and short on money, and Jason Isbell's thumbnail sketches of people caught between a blighted past and a flawed present in the South. Considering that the Drive-By Truckers have released two more studio albums since the last disc represented here, and they continue to slowly but surely keep building an audience, Ugly Buildings, Whores and Politicians: Greatest Hits 1998-2009 is by no means a definitive look at the band's body of work, but as a survey of their formative years, it's great listening and a testament to the power of a band to achieve something great by daring to try; few bands have grown as much through a single act of grand ambition. (Incidentally, that clumsy-sounding title is a reference to a line uttered by John Huston in the film Chinatown: "Politicians, ugly buildings and whores all get respectable if they last long enough.")

My favorite DBT song and quite possibly the best rock song of the 2000s

Just received my copy of the 'Live at the 40 Watt' DVD in the mail last night. Never seen it before and really psyched to fire it up this weekend!

Song of the Day: A Ghost to Most. Cooley is just a fucking genius, enough said. This is just a perfect song. I know this thread is typically an Isbell love-fest (and I love him too, don't get me wrong) but for me overall if I'm ranking my personal favorite DBT writers it still goes Hood>Cooley>Isbell>>>>Shonna.
