Just got back from a nice 5 mile run. Legs were a bit sore from yesterday's, but I'll see if I want to bump it up to 6 tomorrow or Thursday. Aiming for either 7 or 8 on Saturday.

By the way, that website is money. I was 99.9% certain the route I just ran today was 5 miles, and it listed it as 4.9982. I'd say that is close enough.

Here are a couple of other tools that people might like to use in figuring out mile times and paces for races or training.

    Here is a pace calculator:

Here is a race pace calculator:

Did doubles yesterday, felt pretty awesome. It kicks up your metabolic rate for the whole day, went to bed at 9:20, slept like a rock. I'd like to do it everyday but just coming back from a quad strain makes it not wise. As it stands I run doubles about once every 10 days, realistically I should be able to half that right now and effectively drop in the pair once every five days.

Also, speaking of "running routes" and tracking miles, check out:
    http://www.runnersworld.com/
and go to their training log tab.

You can save routes in there and use the site (for free, obviously) to track mileage, pace, shoe usage, races, etc!

guys. i run 2 miles every day. i'm trying to write up a goal for my running, but i don't know what's too much. i was thinking "add a mile to my every-day run every other week for two months." is that too fast to add that distance?

anyone have other goals they could share? maybe not with distance but with pace or something better? i'm really green with running.

    26. i've been running for a month. never ran before that. played sports in high school.

i'm going to start at two miles/day and up that by .5 miles every other week for two months. i'll reevaluate after that.

That isn't bad, but there's a better way of doing it...

Being as it is only your first month of running, here's what I think you should do:

    M-F 2 miles
    Sat 3 miles
    Sun off
    Do this for 2 weeks

    M, T, Th, F 2 miles
    Wed & Sat 3 miles
    Sun fff
Do this for another 2 weeks.

    Mon-Fri 3 miles
    Sat 4 miles
    Sun off
    2 weeks

At this point you will be in good enough shape to build upon a weekly average of 24 mile weeks.

Gonna do an early morning run today, get it done with... I had my best run in about a month yesterday: 10 miles feeling good at a real cruising pace. I was considering racing tomorrow but I'm hanging out with this girl that might wanna stay up late and drink or whatever so I gotta be flexible on my plans. It's all about priorities.

i want to start getting back into racing, but it's tough. i ran cross country and track through high school and college, but pretty much shut it down after that. 11 years later, i want to get back into doing some road races. i've starting running again in the last month or so, but because of my having been into competitive racing in the past, it's hard for me to get out and run just to feel good. i'm looking at a couple of 5K's in September, figuring that if i have a race marked on my calender i'll take the training more seriously and not sneak the occasional unscheduled day off....

Word. After senior college XC season I didn't take it seriously for about a year, running like 20-25 miles a week. In February 2005 I didn't run a step, it was a low point, but then I started living in South Australia for awhile and I said to myself I want to be able to kick people's asses again. I started running everyday and carved myself a new runner's edge once again, like a snake splitting its scales and emerging from its old, useless body with a new lethal and sleek design.

that'll be the hardest part..... i'm not used to losing, and at age 33 i have no delusions that i'll ever be as fast as i once was, but from a competitive standpoint i'd still like to get out there and mix it up a bit and see how low i can get my times again. the days of running sub 15:30 5K's have passed me by, but i'd like to work myself into the 16:00's at least...

Word, you could drop into the 16's again with several months (maybe six) of dedicated injury free basework and throwing down some classic 5K track workouts once a week. There's this guy I run with sometimes, he just turned 50 and he's been breaking into the 16's this season, he's an absolute road warrior though. Right now I run 16:00 - 16:30, it's good enough to win the smaller roadraces round here. I'd love to knock 30 seconds off, cause then I'd be a contender for state champ, but I dunno... I always seem to be focusing and gearing up for longer races than 5K's, I think if I just concentrated on 5K's I could get awesome given that it's less time consuming... Maybe after this fall I'll gun exclusively for 5K speed, it seems like it could be time for that...

I wish... and I mean, I'd need a genie for this one... I wish I could run a 5k in under 20min!! My fastest ever is 23:30.. or 7:30 min/mile. I really only got into running about 4+ years ago and I have improved on my speed and endurance since being a non-runner.

Anyway, that is not my top goal for '08. This year I have my sights set on completing a marathon (in Dec... in FL).

Today was 7.85 mi. It was pretty damn hot so my pace wasn't so great. But today was a long day so pace wasn't the focus!

Every medicorely bad high school XC runner goes under 20, is a 16 year old stronger than you? Hell no, you just need to train your footspeed.

14 x 400, 200 meter jog in between. that's your most important workout.

I'm 34. And I only got into running 4+ years ago. My first year I did a few 5k's... and wondered HOW in the world people run marathons. I chalked it all up to genetics.

So I definitely see how training can make most things possible. But I just don't know if that "wish" is realistic. Maybe if... I mean... maybe once I get passed the marathon goal I will try for a super speedy 5k (in '09).

Trust me, that 'wish' to complete a marathon can become reality. You just have to dedicate yourself to it. The training is key, but the will, drive, and want has to be there as well. I am 34 as well and running for only 1.5 years, and less then 1 year of serious running. You can do it. Trust me.

Question for all the runners out there, anyone train with a Heart Rate Monitor? I just started over the weekend and really like the info that I was getting. I ran more consistent mile times keeping my HR at an even pace, regardless of terrain.

Just got back from the knee doc. I have patellafemoral syndrome, he's recommending 8 weeks of physical therapy which will hopefully solve the problem. He gave me a few guidelines on what type of exercise I can do so I'm going to try to go for a run later this afternoon and see how my knee feels.

To me the glass is half full, they found out (hopefully) what is wrong with my knees and I'm hopeful that the physical therapy will solve my problem. If not I'll have to get an MRI and possibly surgery. So I'm trying to stay positive.

That is good news!! My fingers are crossed that the physical therapy helps and surgery is not needed.

    Thanks

I'm also hoping some of the therapy I can do at home because it's going to be expensive.

Question for all the runners out there, anyone train with a Heart Rate Monitor? I just started over the weekend and really like the info that I was getting. I ran more consistent mile times keeping my HR at an even pace, regardless of terrain.
Oddly enough, I do believe that is an attainable goal (completing a marathon). But the super speedy (imo) 5k... I'm not sure.

However, like I said earlier... that is an '09 consideration. '08 is about the marathon.
