Let's see...
Dave's 45 years old, owns a winery, is a little bit wealthy, supports many good causes with his philanthropy, is happy with his wife and kids, delves into politics a bit, & fronts one of the world's most popular bands.
Drawing from his
current experiences, what would you have him write about, exactly?
If he's drawing inspiration from the above, which he clearly is, then the songs will reflect it-and they do. That should be no surprise, right?
If you want "young, angry & depressed" I believe there's a Nirvana Box Set available on Amazon, or a dose of Eddie Vedder's* angst might be just what your doctor ordered. (If not, perhaps a Lithium prescription is in
your cards-)
Dave's not in 1990's space, (perhaps because it's, um, 2012) so it's highly unlikely you're gonna' get much in the way of "introverted, angst-driven" ballads or screamers.
(You might get "Space Between">"I Love My Second House in Vienna" or
"Damn, I Love My Porsche">"Two Step" if you don't watch out!)
These new songs are really good, & I think "Mercy" will be a classic before its all said and done.
Personally I can't wait to see what they preview next!

*I love Pearl Jam, Eddie-angst and all... Not to mention their epic 3+ hour shows... One of the best all-around rock bands ever, imo...
