Re: Death Cab for Cutie Appreciation

Loooooove Death Cab! There was another thread floating around a while ago, but I'm not sure where it went. I've seen them five times, I think... so wonderful!

Transatlanticism is my favorite album by far. It's really interesting to listen to Plans and Narrow Stairs, then go back and listen to Something About Airplanes.. they have progressed so much over the years, always cool to hear.

Something Without Airplanes was their first album... 1998, I think. It sounds like Seattle.

Pictures in an Exhibition was the first Death Cab song I remember hearing, still love it!

    FUCK. YES!!

i know the new album will be great. i think DCFC got their pop phase over with (even though i loved it) and we'll see a more progressive folky type album. i can't even put into words how much i love this band.

the open door EP still blows my mind. its amazing all the way through

narrow stairs has some REALLY good songs on it (Cath..., Grapevine Fires, I Will Possess Your Heart) but its easily their worst album so far. like i've said, if you were ultimately underwhelmed by NS you have to check out the Open Door EP if you havent, its so great.

I heard it was going to be more of a keyboard driven and upbeat, and based on those articles in the links above what I heard was correct. It seems like a more upbeat record with less guitar kind of screams more pop than progressive folk. We'll see though. They don't dissapoint. Walla is a wonderful producer.

    Walla is a fantastic producer.

And as a side note: I still don't understand how some of the songs on The Open Door EP were left of Stairs.

I would have loved to see No Sunlight, You Can Do Better than Me, Your New Twin Sized Bed, and Pity & Fear for the EP songs.
It would have been absolutely awesome.

DCFC piano usually does mean pop. i didnt read the whole article. either way im pretty positive it will be a great album.

yeah i definitely agree. except leave New Twin Sized bed on NS, and take off The Ice is Getting Thinner.

how they leave Diamond and a Teather, Little Bribes, and My Mirror Speaks off is in a DMB level of "Wtf were they thinking". at least they got released though.

i also forgot to mention Bixby Canyon Bridge when i listed songs that were great on NS. I friggin love that one.

DCFC piano-driven material is what I love most (read: What Sarah Said) so I don't care if it's poppier as long as it produces beauty like that.

I feel pretty "Meh" about Narrow Stairs too. Pretty awesome high points, but pretty bland otherwise. The Open Door EP is pretty phenomenal though, so Narrow Stairs always feels underachieving with that EP on its heels.

It's a taper pull, but the audio is pretty great. I'll drop it off in here when I can.

As for a DCFC top ten:

    We Looked Like Giants
Company Calls/Company Calls Epilogue (I can't and won't decide between those)
    Prove My Hypothesis
    A Lack of Color
    Your Bruise
    Title Track
    For What Reason
    My Mirror Speaks
    Long Division
Your Heart is an Empty Room

This band has songs that just downright tear me up. All of Transatlanticism gives me this strange nostalgic feeling, strange because I never listened to this stuff in the past. But the title track, Transatlanticism, and Death of an Interior Decorator make me weird combination of sad and happy at the same time. Really good band, really emotional.

Love the production and mastering on Plans. The 2LP version is simply terrific listening.

Giants from Trans is a monster live track, love the studio version as well.

I've been appreciating The Photo Album more and more recently, We Laugh Indoors is such a brilliant track.

    And Forbidden Love...

    Can't leave out Photobooth!

Joshua, you do know that Songs with Chords isn't technically a full band album, right?

It's more along the lines of Ben's All-Time Quarterback project. It was mostly, if not all Ben, and then Chris popped in on some stuff randomly. It's more of a solo album, under the DCFC moniker.

This thread has inspired me to listen to Transatlanticism as I lay down for bed. Every time I throw it on it takes me back to my senior year of high school. Good times lol.

Okay, rank the albums best to least best.
Ha, I just did that. Never noticed the similarity. Laugh Indoors pulls of that rhythm much better though.

My top 10 songs, not because you guys care because I know you don't, but for more me to see what I'd put:

    What Sarah Said
    Brothers on a Hotel Bed
    I Will Possess Your Heart
    A Lack of Color
    A Movie Script Ending
    Marching Bands of Manhattan
    We Looked Like Giants
    405
I Will Follow You Into the Dark
    The New Year

Album wise I'm separate from the group that say Plans is too poppy and was a turn in the wrong direction. I love Plans. The only imperfection I see is that has a few skippable tracks, whereas Transatlanticism doesn't have a skippable moment, but the high moments are higher on Plans to me.
