The day Crash was released

Twenty years ago today Crash released! What were you doing that day? I was in school, and having just seen Two Much and So Much on SNL a week or two prior, decided I had to have this album. My mom drove me to Best Buy after school to grab it. I remember thinking it was both cool and odd when I saw Tripping Billies on the track list because I already had it on R2T.

Don't recall anything about Crash, didn't even hear it until 1998 after I bought BTCS in the strength of DDTW video. I don't think I knew a single song from Crash or UTTAD until I had fallen in love with BTCS, particularly The Stone and The Dreaming Tree.

My dad owns a dry cleaners and some dude gave him a copy saying he thought he'd really like it. We listened to it in the car driving around quite frequently. We both were more into the music than Dave's vocals, took some time to warm up to his voice. I didn't end up becoming a real fan of the band until almost 10 years later, but my first show opened with a So Much > Too Much and that made me a very happy guy.

I believe it. Luckily I had never heard Two Step before that day. I only had Remember Two Things. I thought R2T was their first studio album, didn't realize I bought the wrong one until after Crash came out and I started digging more into their music.

Not sure but I think my sister or parents got Crash in one of those BMG bundles, you know, the buy 12 cd's for a penny thing. I remember listening to it on my neighbors computer while she and I played solitaire and played on AOL. Those were the days.

Remember listening to this in the car with my dad so much back in the summer of 96 and into 97. Loved it and still love it.

I was more interested in The Beatles and Grateful Dead. And I was still in elementary school, so I barely knew who DMB was at that point.

I was a junior in high school. Went to Musicland at the mall after school. Came straight home and put it on. Waited for the magic I felt when I first listened to UTTAD and felt uneasy because I didn't really like it that much at first. My first really major experience with expectation vs. reality. Came to love eventually, but had to get through that wall first.

Played this album all of the time ... Two Step became go-to on road trips with friends... Proudest Monkey was the track that grew on me. Even after Under The Table and Dreaming, I was probably thinking "how are these guys really this amazing"

The UTTADrumming 'Carter Cam' - of 41, Say Goodbye and Tripping Billies - got me into the band. I was 6 when Crash came out, and it was about 2004/5 when I found the UTTAD videos of Carter on YouTube. Needless to say, Crash was my first DMB album, and I have been an addict ever since

Because it's not that great. When it's live and it has the jam section it's much better.

I still don't get why people like this album in general. Crash Into Me is great, but Too Much, Tripping Billies (until the ending outro) and DIDO are just annoying, Say Goodbye is dull, LYD is filler, Proudest Monkey is about monkets, SMTS is OK but not their strongest...there's just hardly anything that compares with Dancing Nancies, Ants Marching, Lover Lay Down, Warehouse, DDTW, Crush, The Dreaming Tree, Pig, and Spoon.

I hate Pigs but Pig is a much better song than Proudest Monkey. And yes, Crash Into Me is the best song on Crash by a landslide.

Wait, what's wrong with the Tripping Billies outro? That's the best part of the song.

#41, Two Step, and Lie In Our Graves are all in my top 5.

That's what I said, it was annoying until the outro, which I admit is really good.

I have no idea how a full-on DMB fan can not like this album, one which IMO epitomizes a lot of what their music is about. Romantic sax solos, guitar heavy on rhythms, intricate drumming, poetic lyrics, never mind the songwriting... it's got it all!

*EDIT - merely out of curiosity, when did you get into the band?

The songs of Crash are all better live except Proudest Monkey. Studio "Too much" is very annoying. #41 and Say goodbye studio versions are both outstanding though. I'll certainly say that.

While I owned UTTAD when Crash came out, I wasn't yet a huge fan. I liked a few songs on UTTAD but I hadn't truly gotten into it yet. I eventually bought Crash on CD after hearing So Much to Say on the radio. Again, I liked a few songs but it wasn't one of the most played CDs in my collection at the time. Growing up in SoCal I was pretty heavy into reggae/ska in those days and while I enjoyed DMB, it was kind of outside my usual tastes at the time.

I didn't get heavy into DMB until a family reunion trip to Arkansas in 1998. During the week I was there I heard Stay about a dozen times on the radio while tooling around the backcountry outside Hot Springs. All of a sudden my love for the band just clicked.

I bought BTCS when I got home and rediscovered the awesomeness that was UTTAD and Crash. Been a huge fan ever since.

I was in school, and only liked a handful of DMB songs at the time. I really wasn't aware of the album for almost 3/4 of a year.

I was 9 years old when this came out, never heard of DMB. I was never into DMB at all until my brother (younger) gave me Crash to listen to when I was in college in 2009. Immediately fell in love with the sound (especially studio LIOG) and had to go to the Blossom concert the next year. I remember going to the concert and they opened with Big Eyed Fish, which I had never heard. That discovery phase was pretty special.

Now I'm friggin hooked like a crack addict.

Didn't give them a second thought until 2001, when I picked up a copy of Crash (or was it BTCS? I can't remember)

That is a great article. Well worth the read, so thanks for sharing.

I remember Crash coming out. I was still all over the map with the music I listened to. It came out right as I was finishing 8th grade, and I remember my older brother buying it and listening to it quite a bit. The album was definitely a staple of that summer, but DMB didn't really become my favorite band until high school, when I became obsessed. I was saying to my wife yesterday how Crash is part of the soundtrack to my days in high school. When I listen to that album on a beautiful sunny day drive with the windows open, as I did yesterday, it immediately takes me back to being a teenager. There's an innocence to that album that just transcends time, so no matter when I listen to it, it just takes me back to a simpler time in my life. I've felt the weight of Before These Crowded Streets for so long, and what an accomplishment it was, that I sometimes forget how important Crash was, and is to me. Crash really is their defining album. If someone were to ask me about DMB's "sound" this is the album that I would think of immediately.
