Re: Big 4

LIOG, Two Step, and #41 are all in my top 5. Crazy not to include Crash in the big 3.

i think BW and AFTW are interchangeable, and I think everyday is better than them but close...i also feel that crash and UTTAD are really close for me, BTCS is way above the rest to me while Stand Up is terrible studio (I like some of the live SU)...the only thing close to the big 3 for me is BS/tLWS but because of the awkwardness surrounding the situation I cant lump it in the the big 3

i wonder what it takes for this next record to be their best ever, most likely wont happen but man thatd be nice for them to put out their best ever towards the end of their career, it would be bitter sweet to see dmb as musical powerhouses again

BTCS, masterpiece collection of songs, masterpiece production
Crash, excellent collection of songs, masterpiece production
UTTAD, amazing collection of songs, great production
BS / AFTW, interchangable, BS has the better collection of songs, but AFTW has the better production
BW, great collection of songs, good production
Everyday, great collection of songs, good production, lower than BW because BW has more acoustic stuff, which is what this band is good at
Sit Down, ok collection of songs, mediocre production, a drum machine?

Given my assessment of BS and AFTW, for me, it's like the Big 4 1/2

*by production I mean my opinion on the quality of sound and sound minutia, and by sound minutia I mean the little sounds/quirks that Lillywhite is good at

Really surprised at all the people putting Everyday above BW. Everyday is not a DMB album, it is a Dave solo album that could've used random studio musicians and sounded exactly the same. No signature Carter rhythms. Cheesy synthesizer-sounding violin. Very few memorable sax riffs. No musical exploration during jams or at the end of tracks. As a collection of songs that have been fleshed out live, not bad. As a studio album, still atrocious.

You have to admit that musically, BW is solid. You may dislike the horn section sound and the heavy electric guitar, lyrics, etc. which is all personal preference, but musically and creatively it is head and shoulders above Everyday.

The songs on Everyday aren't terrible, it's just that when I listen to it, like trippingant said above, it doesn't sound like DMB to me. I can't listen to it for too long before I'm craving some Crash, BTCS, UTTAD, or even AFTW.

Just wanting an explanation on your opinion, but how are the songs on Crash 'mostly decent'? I personally think that Crash is the best batch of songs they have ever released and will ever release. Production was outstanding too...just wondering your thoughts on it?

It's a good, average album. I'd rank it with Big Whiskey and Stand Up.

    Rating the songs...

SMTS: 6/10. Not really special; one I could skip over.
Two Step: 7/10. It's great live, and the intro to the studio version is fantastic, but it sorta goes downhill from there.
Crash Into Me: 10/10. DMB classic.
Too Much: 6/10. Really pointless and annoying. DEFINITELY worth skipping over.
    #41: 9/10. Solid classic.
Say Goodbye: 7/10. It's OK but just goes on for too long without being that great.
DIDO: 6/10. God, this one's annoying! How the hell it managed to beat Rhyme & Reason in a recent poll is beyond me.
LYD: 8/10. After the near-torturous previous song, the acoustic guitar on this one is very soothing. No, it's not Lover Lay Down or PFWYG, but it's nice. The "I'm a puppy for your love" bit is sorta cheesy.
LIOG: 8/10. Not too special, but still very nice. The instrumental part is great and I especially love it live.
Cry Freedom: 9/10. Gorgeous, just gorgeous! Definitely one of the best songs on the record.
Tripping Billies: 7/10. Eh, I'm not too into this one. It's a good concert song, but not my favorite *braces self for slew of angry comments*
Proudest Monkey: 10/10. At the end of a hit-and-miss record, it's nice to get a damn near perfect track---I consider the studio version of this one better than almost any they've done live...at least since the mid-90's (seriously, what's with slowing this one down?)

So that's my opinion of Crash. I'm sorry I don't like it as much as other fans. And don't get me wrong---I LOVE UTTAD and BTCS. They are two of the best albums ever made.

Interesting...every song off of Crash is essential DMB for me, with the exception of Let You Down. The album is nearly perfect in every way to me..guess it's just a matter of opinion then
