    Re: Album of the Day

Anyone have any good album recommendations either in the past or present that I could write about? I have a few that I know of but we are supposed to pick an album we have never heard before, so that's why I'm asking.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The problem with this topic is that your professor is asking for an album most have never heard of...To be able to identify an album that did something of this nature that MOST HAVE NEVER HEARD is really really hard to do...but I'm giving it a semi-shot and throwing out a few ideas.

    Music to consider
    - Mumford and Sons - This is folk/bluegrass...straight Irish sounding folk/bluegrass. Why did this album sell in an age of beiber and skrillex?? (CAUSE PEOPLE STILL LIKE REAL MUSIC!!!)
    - Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
    - Adele has done this
    - Any motown albums from back in the day.
    - Mac Dre and the Bay Area rap culture he perpetuated (Drake had a reference to him in a recent song. This would be interesting to talk about because he died young...and you might not have listened to his stuff and style. He definitely had developed his own flow, language, and vocabulary.)
    - Bob Dylan - Anything by him
    - Charlie Musselwhite - He inspired John Belushi to the create the Blues Brothers.
    - Edward Sharp & The Magnetic Zero's - Self Titled - This album comes up everywhere. And they've had great success - Fitz & The Tantrums fits here too...
    - Nirvana and their debut album
    - If you're allowed to do a comedy album...Early George Carlin. He was so crass but he opened up the genre of comedy for generations to come.
    - Iron & Wine
    - Marvin Gaye - What's going on
    - Neil Young - After the Gold Rush
    - Paramore - RIOT!
    - Radiohead...anything once they went Independent
    - Rage Against the Machine - Battle of LA
    - Sublime - They did not receive much recognition before their lead singer's death...could work for the paper
    - Sufjan Stevens - Come on Feel the Illionise - This one could be a good one for you too...
    - The White Stripes - The White Stripes

The big thing seems to be finding something that wasn't mainstream when it came out and how it eventually became part of the mainstream music culture.

Like, in present culture the first thing that comes to my mind is the electronic dance music genre coming from the fringe into mainstream popular music. I guess, I was just wondering if anyone has any good present/past (Doesn't have to be current) examples of this. I have a few I could go back to and just take an album from stuff mentioned in class, but I was looking to find something new to me.

    Thanks for your suggestions btw.
Which albums do you already have in mind?

Also, if you're looking at the influence of EDM, you could also make the case for how soul samples have become an integral part of hip hop. You could trace it back to Jay Zs Blueprint.

I'm thinking an early Sinatra album (for the short time crooning was mainstream), Pet Sounds, or Freewheelin' Bob Dylan as the ones I could fall back on. Also might look at an early blues record if I can find a good one. Just wanted to look around here and see if any suggestions spurred my curiosity.

We've disagreed on this before, but I don't think the average person has the first clue who Arcade Fire is or can name two of their songs. Bon Iver is probably a little closer, but the whole "Bonny Bear" fiasco is a strong counterargument. Neither one of those really changed the game or "moved the center," IMO.

You have to remember who Eminem was before MMLP. Stan specifically. He was a cultural lightening rod, despised by parents and critics who couldn't recognize his brilliance thanks to his fog of vulgarities. Stan changed all that, both culturally and critically. It became ok, even trendy, to like Eminem and to a larger extent, rap itself.

Swift is the standard bearer of pop country. It bubbled below the surface for a while -- Carrie, Shania, even Garth to some extent -- but her rise tapped the geyser and flooded pop radio with country tunes, and vice versa.

Adele might be a great example in a few years.

If you don't see "indie music" growing significantly, especially behind artists like Arcade Fire & Mumford & Sons & Bon Iver, you are blind. When AF wins a Grammy, that is enough evidence to show that they have made some impact. They played f'n Madison Square Garden.

Your examples make no sense. Taylor Swift has never had anything to do with "counterculture" or "underground" anything. She has always been a pop contrivance and just because her songs are decent doesn't mean she has changed anything.

Agree with Eminem because for a guy like that to become so popular, that's pretty impressive.

But "indie music" becoming not-so-indie anymore is certainly noteworthy. And it has been led by groups like The National and Arcade Fire.

I think bands like Foster the People should be included along with Bon Iver and Arcade Fire too when talking about indie "leaking" into mainstream. While I am fairly indifferent about them and Torches, I will say "Pumped Up Kicks" had some of my friends asking me to recommend more indie artists to listen to. I think huge "indie-esque" crossovers (such as "Little Lion Man" and "Pumped Up Kicks") play an important role as a sort of gateway drug into more indie, underground, and non-mainstream music. Even a band like fun. comes into play. "We Are Young" is all over the radio/tv and while their album is pretty terrible that song has freaking Janelle Monáe on it. Any band that is exposing people to an artist like her has some value to me and indie music as a whole.

Menzingers - On the Impossible Past* - only a few songs in, but liking it so far. Kinda reminds me of Fucked Up with a toned down singer.

I dont think any of those bands has really moved the pop music center, especially National or Arcade Fire. Bon Iver is an interesting case but I'm not sure you're seeing a societal shift in influence or acceptable because of his two albums (again, people think he's called Bonny Bear).

Yeah, I agree. Arcade Fire and other groups have gained popularity for sure, but they're not actually doing much damage in popular music. Which is a shame.

What does that mean?? Is his singing muffled because he's singing underground?

I just don't get what "Indie" is anymore. It's like when people consider "Pop" a genre. It means popular music.. The Beatles used to be "Pop". And now these bands today pride themselves off of being "Indie", but what does that even mean, what the hell are you even good at?

If Mumford is Folk/Bluegrass then why do people put them in the same genre as Bon Iver?

If Mumford is Folk/Bluegrass then why do people put them in the same genre as Bon Iver?
It used to mean an attitude or a sound. Now I think it just means not being directly on one of the big three/four major labels.

This was something that surprised me after Arcade Fire won the Grammy last year. I figured they were fairly well-known. They had been on the cover of fucking Rolling Stone, right?

No. More people associate them with "who the fuck is Arcade Fire?" than actually know their music.

Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, Wilco, The National, My Morning Jacket. Now. I love these bands. But these artists have gotten about as big as they're gonna get.

Fact: Adele sold about the same amount of copies of "21" in the week after the Grammy Awards that "Bon Iver, Bon Iver" has sold total.
