Agree. That's probably what it is. My other thing is that a lot of the songs tend to sound too similar or it's "one rock song after another"

Oh, no need to rank Radiohead albums. It's been done to death.

Just give me your top 10.
Doesn't have to be in any order

Not as simple as just sad vs happy; more about a subconscious 'if this bombs, my career is fucked' vs 'if this bombs, I've still got legions of fans and will still have $X in my bank account.'

Then genre-wise, rock/pop is tricky because you have to kinda keep up with trends or move ahead of the curve and lead the way. OR you just have to be so far behind/removed you're not part of that problem. Someone like Tom Waits for example, his music has evolved but it's never really gotten 'modern.' But someone like Bieber has to constantly be right at the cusp or he could be fucked. He can probably survive with a poor outing, just because he's got enough fans/songs at this point, but one pop album that's no longer the 'cool' sound and he could drop like so many pop stars have.
    Agree with all this

Four good/great blues rock albums does not qualify for "one of the best runs of albums"

Before we even have a useful discussion it's probably best to define "one of the best"

By my standards, "one of the best" would have to be in the top three best album runs of all time. I would consider an argument for top five best album runs of all time, which would get the Stones' run closer to being in consideration.

Top 3 my god what a high horse you're on

One of the best means it's up there with the best 50, maybe 100 runs of albums

Kurdt had simple yet catchy guitar licks. Why he always included in those "best of guitarists" list by Rolling Stone is beyond me. Probably to boost sales?

I don't know if Dave is considered "influential" but some of his stretches are really hard to pull off.

I would think Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band would be "America's Band". Aerosmith? ehhhh possibly? If we're going by album sales and discounting solo acts the Eagles would be it.

Bruce is super slanted to the east coast though...trying to think of who covers the most ground...

Billy Joel maybe? He's super east coast too though I guess.

EDIT: Though I'd actually probably say Bruce over Billy

Yeah, I think a band like the Grateful Dead is not a bad answer. They may not have had mainstream success/radio play but they're very influential, they had/have a large fanbase, they could play anywhere in the country, etc etc.

I mean what's more American than making your living touring the country?

I think to be considered americas band the majority of Americans would have to have at least 3 of their songs permanently ingrained in their brain. So it's the chainsmokers I guess

The answer is Hall & Oates. They cover Baby Boomers, Generation X and Millenials.

I'm just trying to think if you asked 1000 people in every state, which artist would 1) most of them actually know, and 2) the most people say they'd consider themselves a fan of. Or, enjoy a handful of songs at least.

I think Bruce or Billy is my best guess. Or Michael Jackson? He may be too controversial, though.

Even in the 70s the Beach Boys (without Brian) were on top of the world.

I think they are the answer for 60s-70s.

    80s? Madonna?
    90s? DMB for sure
