That said - I would love to slow down the fast and loud version of DMB sometimes, though. I don't understand why 1998 Tim Reynolds is SO different than 2008-2016 Tim Reynolds. I do miss keys too, and wish Coffin would be a little gentler sometimes.

In '98, the band was still fresh and innovative and had not fallen into default roles. Tim was only an occasional guest. His role in the songs was more to be part of the ensemble, his lines were more about counterpoint or simulating a horn section and built into the arrangements. Sure he took point when it was time to solo, but Dave's songwriting isn't as 'out of the box' as it used to be.
Now his role is straight up lead guitar. He's great, but his role now is to comp until it's his time to solo. He's basically Slash now. He doesn't have lines in the newer tunes like in SMTS, R&R, or W'house.
I miss the Butch keys. It's a shame that the era he ended the team with was the self-indulgent jam era. He added a dimsension to the band's sound that was fresh, but didn't get the newer material deserving of his ability (Stand Up).
I was a bigger fan of Jeff when he joined the band versus now. I feel like Jeff's own voice has been buried in favor of wearing a musical LeRoi skin. He may have done his own thing a bit much, but it was new blood in the equation. Him toning it down as much as he has just doesn't seem like the Jeff Coffin i used to be excited for anymore.
But mostly the band just needs a break and a fresh perspective. It won't ever be the old days again, but they are in a somewhat stagnant place right now.
