To my knowledge, in years like 2006, the songs were more sporadically tested on the road. It seems like when they drop 3+ new songs on the first night of a summer tour that an album is pretty far in the works. Obviously this is not full proof, but at least follows a logical timeline,
Long story short, this year fits the timeline more like 2009 and 2012 which led to albums very soon.

This isn't what he's calling road testing. In the case of Big Whiskey and Away from the world, those albums were already recorded in studio by the time they were playing the songs live. The album hadn't come out yet, but the words were written, everything was recorded... we were all just waiting on the marketing machine basically, maybe some mastering.
Way back in the day (and I'm saying this not having been there, but just listening to tapes and following the timeline), they would take songs out on the road when an album was really just an idea... Words would change, instrumental parts would develop. They would almost decide how a song worked best and then take their favorites/favorite versions to the studio. They really are two different things...
