Re: Thank you Chester Copperpot...
the last week or so i decided to start listening through all the LTs in full. so far, i got through the first 4, which included some shows in eras that i typically don't listen to. there are some songs that i honestly don't know how people could say they are worse now than they were back 15 years ago.
take Jimi Thing from LT1 for example. people complain about how the song is stale now and that it needs to be changed up, but it never really changed even from the early days. its always been boyd solo breaks between verses going into a sax solo and then an electric guitar solo (when tim was around), same as it is now. the only difference was dave attempting to solo instead of scatting, and some slight differences to the beat carter plays during the jam. but its essentially been the same structure for 20 years.
Jimi from LT1 is absolutely brutal to listen to. roi has this awful effect on his horn and tim sounds like when you tried picking up the phone while connected to dial up internet. Jimi from LT4, which much better than 1, is still the same structure as it is now. it just sounds looser because there are less instruments and its not as heavy sounding, but i don't get the argument that its stale now but it was ok in the 90s when its never really changed like a song like Crush has over the years.
Two Step from LT1 is nothing to write home about. its 7 minutes long, thats it. not much going on outside of the verses and chorus. no intro, no jam, nothing interesting or unique. now go listen to Two Step from LT13. its like night and day, and LT13 is worlds better. its played more crisply and far more interesting musically between the intro and tim's solo.
LIOG from LT4 has like a minute long boyd solo. far less exciting than the build up the song has now. DDTW is a song that needs the aggression it has now with it sped up and the electric guitar. and songs like Stay and Too Much has benefited from being cleaned up and more structured towards the end of the song like they are now compared to their early days.
people talk about how fast Rapunzel is now, but listen to it from LT3. its so incredibly slow. its like its played in slow motion. Raven is better now than it was in 2000 because it actually has lyrics now. and any Recently that is missing the jam (like LT3) is a wasted performance.
there are plenty of songs that have improved over the years and are performed better than they've ever been. and that LITHOG from randalls island in 2011 i actually a great performance of the song and is much more interesting to listen to than early versions of Two Step.
