Gotta disagree with you on that one.

The album is alright, but this has turned into my favorite song on the album. The best hook, the best lyrics, just overall great.

some parts of the album may be cheesy, like taylor swift's four lines, but I really like it as a whole. Edge of Desire is awesome!

Mayer also said something about another album coming quicker than you think, with more badass guitar riffs and less taylor swift (not a quote, but you get what I mean)

i thought this thread was gonna be a live version of the song which I'm really looking forward to...battle studies is kind of meh to john mayer's standards, but still pretty good.

    Re: John Mayer

I think it's terrible because it's just so mediocre and just so god damn boring. It's such middle ground. Sure the music isn't offensive, but it's just to safe. That's why I think a ton of you can back this album. It's not painful to the ears, but shit half of my heart? With Taylor Swift? Good god. That's awful. The concept is super corny, most of the lyrics on the album are awful and most of the music puts me to sleep. I think his earlier poppy stuff had subtle touches of brilliant musicianship, and the lyrics were more heartfelt and personal. And then on Continuum he fused that with his blues rock talents. And it worked, his songwriting got better and the music was more confident. But this album throws me off, I think he thought he could get away with this and somehow this album would be perceived as intelligent and a risk. But really it's run of the mill to me. He can do better.

The first two listens through the album I was like WTF did you do John Mayer! No!

But, I listened a couple of more times and honestly, I really enjoy the album now. He always tries to do something different and I think he did again this time. So, I give props for him doing something different again but, I don't think it was the best place he has been (continuum takes that spot for now).

As for Assassin, I can't believe it is getting love... that is the one song I skip every time still. I think it is dumb because I just sit there thinking no John, you are not an assassin, you are song writer... dumbass. Oh, and I feel like it was written late for the Mr. & Mrs Smith movie or something which kinda makes me laugh cause of Jennifer Aniston and Brad/Angelina's BS.

I do like Edge of Desire though. I also think Taylor Swift was a good choice for that song. Not only is she hot but she has a great voice and worked really well on that song.

disagree a lot, i skip that song but go penn state.

i agree with those who said the album was 'safe' and that's what makes it boring. his first two albums he was establishing himself, and continuum was different and unsafe, and this was kind of more like heavier things. so it gets more boring.

assassin is bullshit and I don't understand why people like so much and the crossrods cover is easily the worst song he's ever done. Why would you cover a cover and put it on your album? He covered he cream version, added nothing to it and called it his own. Still a John mayer fan but it endlessly pisses me off how such a talented musician can be content with putting out mediocre pop music.

Did anyone else see his ridiculous rolling stone cover and story? I lost what little respect I had for him after that
