I wouldn't say it's competitive as years past. I think this year there's a big WCH hangover that's really affecting teams across the board.

This has nothing to do with the Caps. Caps have played like shit all year/significant portion. But so have the Rags. So have the Penns. So have the Blackhawks.

The entire NHL is one big Pacific division

I was at our local minor league team's game tonight and wearing one of Avs sweaters. I took it off and placed it under my seat in protest.

Hopefully hitting bottom like this will push the team towards pulling the trigger on a few changes. I loved - LOVED - Joe as a player, but Stevie-Y-GM he is not. He can only preach the "patience" approach for so long.

In cool news, awesome thing happened at the Grizzlies (our ECHL team) game tonight.

We had an emergency backup due to call ups and injuries. A local guy and well known in our small hockey community. Of course, the starting goalie takes a ripper to the face and has to leave the game, trailing blood, and this local emergency backup has to come in.

The grizzlies did everything they could to delay long enough for the starter to get stitched up. Talking to the refs, using their time out, etc. I found out after that the injured goalie even had the wherewithal to let the blood trail from his wound clear from the crease over to the bench so the ice crew would take longer to clean it up.

But sure enough, this backup had to play. Ended up playing a little over half the 3rd period before the starter was able to get stitched up and return, and had ZERO goals against on NINE shots. How awesome is that?

I can't imagine the nerves he must've felt. Man... and the rest of the team. They'd just tied the game up at 2 and were on the PK when the injury occurred.

And how about the other team? Can't capitalize and beat a non-pro goalie?

Meanwhile, our beer league goalie let in 4 goals on 8 shots last night in the playoffs. Luckily we put up 5 goals on 30+ shots...so, we move on to the finals on Saturday.

Matty, question for you as a ref -

Last night we had a ref just absolutely lose his cool. He said that we were "getting to him" and shortly after saying that he had a couple calls (in a matter of minutes) that were questionable at best.

1) He called a penalty on one of my teammates as we entered the zone in the middle of a 3-on-1 for a delay of game. What was the delay for? For having his sleeves pulled up over his elbow pads like Ovie here:

Now, I do this ALL THE TIME. Literally every single game. I hate the feeling of my sleeves dangling lose around my wrists/in my gloves. The ref said he warned our bench that "equipments needs to be worn as it is intended" and so he called us for 2 minutes. We were livid, it was a close playoff game (3-2 game at that point) and he waited until we're on a 3-on-1 to call it? Busch league. But we scored a shorty on the PP anyway, made it 4-2, and you could tell he was annoyed. THEN...

2) In the middle of play about 2 minutes later, he was down talking to the other team's goalie. Just standing at the net while the game is going on. The goalie is just standing at the net kinda like this while talking to him: http://cache2.asset-cache.net/gc/568...023OpLgg%3D%3D

I, the ever opportunist, just threw the puck down from the other side of the ice on net while the two are conversing, and it slides in the back of the goal. It was probably a 130' goal. They both see it slide in, and after about 10 seconds he calls it NO GOAL. I nearly blew a gasket. I skate straight up to him and he won't even talk to me. He said the net was off it's pegs (it wasn't), and when I asked why he didn't blow the play dead if the net was off, he said "well I didn't think you'd shoot it from there." What?! I'm still livid. We ended up winning 5-4, but that could have cost us the game. I don't know if I should write the league coordinator or what...but this guy clearly had it out for us.

Curiosity, does your beer league allow slapshots and checking? Mine does not allow either (and you get penalized for both) so must of us don't wear any protection above the waist except for elbow pads - which makes you feel a helluva lot quicker and lighter than in full padding plus your range of vision is better. Yeah, checking happens and sometimes the refs let it go if it is not a hard one but everyone knows if you tee up a slapshot you are getting tossed for the game and likely suspended for the next one - despite the fact that the goalies wear full gear because some guys can snap off a shot or take a wicked wrister that can cause some damage.

Where do you play? That sounds awful. I've never played in a league that doesn't allow slap shots. I would struggle quite a bit

We can't fully check, but there's sort of an unwritten rule that bumping someone off the puck is fine.

We play Saturday nights at like 11pm and a lot of us are well over 35 so they tend to err on the side of safety because all of us have to work and would rather not be injured. As for checking, yeah - if we make some contact and pull up we won't get flagged. It's a lot of fun to be honest, just nice to lace them up and play.

As for your almost getting tossed I can only imagine how pissed you were, good thing your teammates were there to pull you away! I am a defender so my teammates allow me to fly off the handle fairly often and usually I just rant about a call or something but occasionally I can get really steamed.

Wow - this is being extremely generous but last season the Dallas D and goaltending were subpar but their offense largely bailed them out. This year both their D (minus Oduya and Benn who are solid) and goalies are just plain garbage and their O is doing them no favors at all!
