I found it very tough to dwindle my list down to five. Other songs I considered:

    In Dreams - Roy Orbison
Lover, You Should've Come Over - Jeff Buckley
Cry Me a River - Justin Timberlake
    Skinny Love - Bon Iver
    Landlocked Blues - Bright Eyes
When You Were Mine - Prince
    Don't Speak - No Doubt

Forgot about Skinny Love, that's a good one. I guess it technically is but I would never think of I Want You Back as a break up song, I hear that and am automatically in a good mood.

Can't get them all haha. Black has gotta be up there for the guys, whereas Don't Speak was an anthem for the ladies.

Agreed. The subject of Epiphany isn't related to the topic but it's such a powerful song. I remember the first time I heard it and how emotional I got to this day. Aaron Lewis is great. He might be a drunk asshole but dude can write and sing.

I don't know anything about Adele though, lol

i don't really know exactly which songs are specifically break-up songs, so it's kind of hard to answer

well okay I wasn't making that reply specifically to you, just happened to be in the same post as quoting you.

But given how popular she's been right out of the gate and the majority of her first 2 albums seemed greatly inspired by breakups...

Has no one seriously mentioned "Song For the Dumped" by Ben Fold's Five? I mean....the title speaks for itself.

    No particular order for me:
No One's Gonna Love You - Band of Horses
Song For the Dumped - Ben Folds Five
Stay or Leave - Dave Matthews
    Skinny Love - Bon Iver
    Don't Speak - No Doubt

I don't know if they'd rank in my top five, but I listened to these a lot after my last breakup a year and a half ago:

    Muse - Dead Inside
Mumford and Sons - Lover of the Light
Mumford and Sons - Where are You Now?

Only time I've broken up with a GF I didn't really listen to music to get through it because I didn't want to associate good music with bad memories. That's just me though tbh

Another great one is "The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot" by Brand New. I was like 13 when that song came out and just got dumped for the first time like three weeks earlier, I think that was the first time a song actually made me cry
