Ants Podcast 43 Discussion

"Halfway Home, Kinda"

DMB is on break, so we thought we'd also take the opportunity to skip a week and put our feet up for a while. Now, we're back, and we tackle the first "half" of the tour, giving our overall thoughts and make our predictions for what to expect for the final West Coast stretch of #DMB2Sets. A little fall tour talk sprinkled in as well.

I think the link on the front page might be for #42, if I'm not mistaken... Can't wait to hear this one, though

On a positive note, you guys attending the Gorge will get Spoon where Berkeley will not get it.

Atlanta and Camden N1 didn't have Dave solo or Dave and Tim, but Hartford N1 was completely full band.

Great podcast! I'm gonna throw in my two cents about set lengths and go with 23-24 songs per night. I don't think we'll get a full 25 songs each night, but I agree that there won't be any repeats, or if there are, they'll be played acoustic and electric on different nights (eg. GGT, Rhyme...) I just hope they're good songs, if there are any repeats. I really hope there's a bust out that will shock people, like #34 last year. LYD would be unbelievable, but maybe out of the realm of possibility. I think Spoon is a definite, but whenever I say something out loud, it rarely happens. (I should be saying that the Lovely Ladies will definitely be on the west coast, then.)

Are we really counting Tampa's Dodo tease as Dave solo?

Love the podcast. One thing to say about it though... I do like Broken Things but idk if thats before about 5 songs I would prefer hearing in the latter half of this tour. It would be great to hear in the acoustic but, I would still like to hear Busted Stuff, Captain, The Last Stop, Big Eyed Fish, Let you Down, Crazy Easy, Break Free, American Baby Intro, and Joyride over it. But that is just my personal opinion obviously.

Big Eyed Fish has actually already been played a few times this year... still think I'd like to hear it over Broken things though. Especially acoustic

I feel like the mystery/demand surrounding Broken Things is purely from it's absence in sets. If I recall correctly, the few versions I did hear on tape from 2013 were actually pretty flat sounding. They just didn't capture the magic that the studio cut has.

The call for Broken Things, at least for me, is less about the quality of the song (although it is good) and more about the fact that a solid tune off their most recent album simply isn't getting played. It seems like it would be an easy choice for a setlist.

its an absolute crime that they haven't used more songs in the acoustic set, as far as I'm concerned. The idea had so much potential, and while I've enjoyed the shows this year, the picture I had in my head isn't lining up with what they are giving us. Maybe I was just expecting too much?

    Re: Ants Podcast 43 Discussion

I looked back at 2008 when they played 3 nights at both Gorge and Berkeley back to back weekends. Granted there were less songs in the catalog then and they were coming off of Roi's death just a couple weeks earlier.

Gorge was the first weekend and there were 56 unique songs played (6 repeats during the weekend) - this includes ASTB and Too Much (fake).

Berkeley was the second weekend and there were 54 unique songs played (4 repeats during the weekend). Out of those 54, only 3 of them were not played at Gorge. Out of the 56 at Gorge the previous weekend, only 5 of them were not played at Berkeley.

My thinking is that since there is a recent precedent for not having repeats on 3 night stands (Caravans, '12 Gorge (except Mercy), '13 Gorge) I don't think there will be any repeats during each weekend. But I wouldn't expect many different songs played at Gorge vs Berkeley; maybe 3-4.

I'm thinking the same. No repeats, but similar songs. 5 different. Gotta expect something fairly rare each weekend.

Looks like there were 15-16 different songs play at each Berkeley and Gorge. That's way above what I expected.

Before either stop, I was thinking 10 different. 15-16 is a solid number, a few hundred or maybe upward of a 1,000 or so did all 6 nights. Personally. I would have died. No repeats at either. Good stuff
