*** Official Santiago, Chile December 2013 thread

Hey everyone - wanted to get this thread going.

Anyone else going to the Santiago Summerfest at Pista Atletica on December 17, 2013? What a wonderful surprise that we can attend!!
We were already planning to visit relatives in Santiago at that time, and can now take in another show this year.

Any Ants living in Santiago, or nearby, that can give us advice about the city, venue, etc? Would you stay nearby (or in another neighborhood, and commute)?
Do people tailgate in the parking lot before the shows, or more make use of public transit? We are not sure what to expect with this "festival".

Thanks for any advice that you have -

Len

Another act announced - "Gondwana" - a Chilean reggae band.
They are looking for more local acts to open the show - but it begins at 4pm, and we already have 4 bands announced (DMB, Incubus, Soja, Gondwana).

Did I read that Incubus is headlining the Santiago show?
If DMB precedes Incubus, will we get a full DMB show?

Also - can anyone provide us with advice re: touring in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.
We are planning to go for 4 days, over Xmas, after spending time in Santiago.
We have received some pretty outrageous quotes for tours, so we are wanting to understand the situation better.

    Thanx

Re: *** Official Santiago, Chile December 2013 thread

Ok. So, I have been living in Santiago for a little over 3 months now. I would suggest staying in the Providencia/Los Condes area. Santiago Centro is ok as well but not quite as nice. Where the show is (Chilean national stadium) is not a very nice area. It will be fine safety-wise for the show because there should be plenty of people, obviously don't be an idiot, but isn't a very interesting part of the city. There is a Metro stop about a 10-minute walk from the stadium. That is one of the furthest distances from a Metro stop anywhere in Santiago, so, once you are on the Metro getting anywhere is very easy, and cheap (~$1.50 US for any distance, no matter how short or long).

I am not sure about tailgaiting before the show. My buddy went to a Springsteen concert and said there was no lot scene at all, but that was at an indoor arena. It's possible there will be more going on at this site. One thing to note: if you want to booze at the show, sneak your own in. They do not sell liquor at most of the public events here. I did go the the Chilean Independence day festival at the national stadium and there was plenty of alcohol available, but I have a feeling there won't be for a concert (none at Bruce).

As for San Pedro de Atacama... It's a great trip, albeit very touristy. Everything you do there will be through a tour company. Great town but as one could expect, it is pricey. I have been to the Lagunas Antiplanicas ($40 US, 8am-3pm), Geysers Tatio ($60 US, 4am-noon), Valle de la Luna (went sandboarding as well; $30 US, 5 hours, flexible times), and on an astronomy tour (it is probably the best place in the world to observe the stars because SPdA is also one of the top 5 driest places in the world; ~$32 US, late at night for 2.5 hours).

You should just book all your tours when you get there, basically every other building in SPdA is a tourist booth. Fly from Santiago > Calama and take a bus (~2 hours, can reserve a bus in the airport for ~$24 US/person).

Hope this helps. Also, this is my first post ever on this forum haha.

Re: *** Official Santiago, Chile December 2013 thread

Thanks for the reply!! We leave on our adventure in 5 days!! 1 week in the Galapagos Islands on a 16 person catamaran first.

We have arranged to stay close to relatives at the Hyatt Regency in Los Condes (I know expensive - wife got most nights using rewards). We will come and go, since the relatives work during the week, and have time for us on the 2 weekends. We will hit Vina/Valpraiso for 2 days, and San Pedro de Atacama for 3 nights (Dec. 23 - 26).

Since it is over Xmas, we thought that we should arrange the SPA tours ahead. We ended up arranging tours for just a bit more than the prices you quoted, however several are private - we really would like to see the petroglyphs in Rainbow Valley, and that is not a regular tour.

We are really looking forward to seeing DMB in Chile. We are looking at taking public transit to get down there, but will arrange for a ride ahead of time to get us back to the hotel.

Regarding safety, we are fairly experienced travellers - but should we be very concerned? (I have heard extreme stories that would suggest you should not carry ANYTHING in the front pockets of your pants, and should not wear even a modest necklace as it could be torn from your neck - hard to believe)? I carry my valuables in a fanny pack and/or napsack. What is the situation these days?

Do you think they would prevent a small backpack from entering the stadium? Are you thinking I should throw beer or wine into the bottom of it (we are not into hard alcohol)? ie. Concealed, or is this just what everyone does there? Do they check everyone (we can just play "stupid" tourist if they find it).

Maybe we will see you at the show - GA front section. I will almost certainly be wearing my black DMB Gorge 2012 T-shirt (yellow moon on front and campfire firedancer on back - love that shirt!), and a Tilley (canvas wide-brimmed) hat.

We are also looking to meet up with any other Ants at the show, so we can keep an eye on each other's things, space, etc.
Anyone else going to the Santiago show?

I live in Chile and I'm attending the show too! You can safely carry your things, it'll be ok. Maybe if you were alone night on that area I wouldn't recommend you exposing your 1000 USD digital camera, but since there'll be lots of people its going to be ok. No worries about carrying things in your pockets or in a bag either.

I don't think they'll prevent you from entering a small backpack, but in case you are checked, they won't let you enter the booze. Not many people does it, so you better drink before the show and not during. I will do that.

Tailgating doesn't exist here! so forget about that.

I have tickets for the PREFERENCIAL area, is it the same as you?

Yes we are also in preferential - it looks like the front 1/4 of the GA Floor. We will probably watch from a little bit back, unless it is easy to stand close and still have some space for dancing/moving around.

My wife is quite happy - I reminded her that she always seems to have a place standing behind somebody VERY tall. At this show her 5'4" body may be a relative giant compared to many in the crowd! lol

I am understanding you about the alcohol situation (or NOT situation). I am wondering what kind of local Chilean beer is available? I generally drink Heineken and am also liking the IPAs (India Pale Ales) lately. Do you have anything to recommend (stronger than Corona or Budweiser)?

    Good luck to everyone.
Please come and say hi at the show!

Well good chilean beers are Austral, Kunstmann and Kross, just to name a few. If you want to have some drinks before the show I recommend you to pass by a place called "Plaza Nunoa". Its a nice park with lots of pubs and restaurants where you can try some local drinks and food. It got a nice "boulevard" under the ground level but still outdoor where you may want to go. Its not far from the show's place.

Im going with my girlfriend also, PM me your mail so we can keep in touch and maybe meet up. Unfortunately its a work day here and the producers still dont let us know at what time DMB will be on stage so Im still not sure how early I will be able to leave the office.

Another recommendation for beer is Rothhammer - Brutal Hops IPA. It is difficult to find however. I have had success finding it at the UniMarc grocery stores although I'm not sure if every location carries it. Also, the Jumbo (grocery chain) located at the Costanera Center in Providencia carries Rogue. They at least have the IPA, Dead Guy Ale and a few others.

Unfortunately I'm only able to afford the General tickets but hopefully they will be just fine. Going with a Chilean girl and trying to convince a couple other Americans to come with. Should be fun!

Lenn - enjoy your trip in Chile.

    Hey everyone,

We are writing from Guayaquil, Ecuador after an AMAZING week on the Galapagos Islands.
We are here for a few more nights, and then off to Santiago, Chile!!
Again, send a note if you are attending the show. At the show you might see us in the premium front floor area.
Me (or wife) will be wearing a black Gorge 2012 T-shirt (yellow moon on front and firedancer bonfire on back - the poster art that was by Marc Spusta). Likely middle to back, unless it is comfortable being closer.

It was SOJA -> DMB -> Incubus

Funny (and sad) how a band like Incubus is more popular than DMB here

It was probably our best view ever for DMB - nobody tall in front of us ~ 6 people from front.
