Haha! (Love the back and forth)...And after sophomore year engineering students are busy learning how to improve and advance the world's technology and infrastructure. Math majors are busy learning how to apply for math teaching jobs.
The original set up of the problem is arbitrary and thus we can come to both conclusions depending on how you view the equation.
I view it as distributing the 2.
For me to agree with you, the problem would have to be (48÷2)(9+3). Then the answer is clear.
