My friend's parents have a boat in Burnham harbor, which is the harbor right next to NI. They always go down there and listen to shows, and I've had many friends tell me they take their boat down and pull up to listen to shows. However I have no idea how good the sound quality is - I think they go more for the fun of it and for the "background" music.
I have a feeling a lot of people who have boats and attend will end up tailgating in the harbor. Especially since it's the 4th of July. We hung out in Burnham Harbor last year for 4th of July and ended up staying at the docks the whole time. Boating on the 4th is a total shit show, everyone is drunk and everyone who has a boat is out so it's very crowded.
A few years ago we went boating on the 4th and it was a total nightmare.
Expect the entire area by NI to be crazy congested. Not just everyone attending the show, but hundreds of people will go down to Musuem Campus/Shedd area/NI just to picnic and watch the fireworks.
Overall NI isn't as bad as people are making it out to be, it's just a totally different experience than going to Alpine, Deer Creek, etc.
