I liked older U2 better. Everything before the mid/late 90s. It seems like since then they, along with most mainstream music, lost substance. A few exceptions stand out, but for the most part U2 sold out.

I wouldn't say U2 sold out, I think it's more U2 got older. I love the newer stuff, not as much as the best of the 90's or 80's stuff, but I think it's great pop music.

Yea...kinda hard to sell out when you were massive when your classic shit was new. You could argue doing the Apple thing is selling out I guess, but again, there really wasn't much room to get bigger.

I realize many people feel the same way about DMB, just saying....I don't get "it" with U2...at all.

If you look at their run from Boy through Achtung Baby, it makes perfect sense why they are so big. That's 7 records that are at worst good, at best classic. And their live shows have always been great.

So that's 11 years of being awesome, which is more than enough to build tons of die-hards who will stick through the junk. And even if you think Zooropa and Pop are bad, All That You Can't... is a pretty fantastic record. I if you think the last 3 are bad, again, they've still got plenty of beloved albums/songs to keep people going back time and time again.

Well, I'm shocked at how popular they are because I don't think they have more than a couple of good songs, but I realize many people obviously disagree.

It also looks like they basically play the same show every single night which seemingly would keep people away from going to multiple shows, but I guess not.

Most bands play literally the exact same show, song for song, at the same venue on back to back nights? I get most bands play the same hits every night, but looking at the last U2 shows in France they were identical sets back to back nights.

plus when you work in the efficiency that gives you for lighting / video, etc. it's worth it for a lot of bands

I can't think of a rock band that is big enough to sell out an arena back to back nights that would play identical sets, but OK.

Not saying everyone has to mix up every single song, but one would think they would want fans to go to both shows. I'm sure some do, but that seems insane to me.
