This day was a big deal back when I was in college.
I went to the University of Vermont 1999-2003. They used to have a tradition where every April 20th at 4:20 p.m. the student body, locals, and professors - generally 2000 - 5000 people - would gather on the lawn in front of the library and light up all at the same time. There would be a count down like at new years, and then when the clock hit 4:20 you would hear cheers, and air horns, and beach balls would be bouncing throughout the crowd. It was crazy... The cops never arrested anyone, and basically would just supervise the event making sure no one got hurt. It was all over the news and it got bigger and bigger every year as people from Canada and upstate NY started making there way to the event. Once UVM 420 started getting national attention, the governor (Howard Dean) threatened to put a halt on state funding unless UVM got its act together. The whole thing didn't seem real. They played "half baked" on the student channel all day long, there were street performers hanging out all over campus, people selling bake goods throughout the crowd, media, the works.. And after the event, people just smoked pot in the open for the rest of the day. In essense, pot was legal at UVM for 24 hours.

does anyone not really care about this day because they smoke whenever they want anyway? haha. It's sort of like St. Patty's to me. It's like a giant day of amateur hour.
Though, the thing jdbartender was talking about would be pretty awesome.

For those bashing, this thread was meant for those of us who like to recognize the day. I too smoke basically every other day of the year, but 4/20 is a good reason for anyone to smoke.

I wasn't bashing the holiday, I don't really care about it. I was just pointing out how 85% of the people that smoke today smoke a ton the rest of the year anyway to the point where it's just sort of silly to have a day. And the other 15% just obnoxiously feel the need to let everyone know they're stoned, like they're some sort of rebel or something. If anything I was bashing the 15% haha.
If there was a significant increase in the 'legalize it' debate or it was a day utilized to its fullest extent to raise awareness and dialogue about marijuana I'd be 100% for it. I'm sure there are little events here and there but overall its pretty much just another day haha. |
