Re: Official The Wire Thread

Finished Season 3 last night. Not gonna lie, it took a few episodes to get it going for me. Maybe my brain was still stuck in season 2, but it was poetry in motion nonetheless once everything started falling into place in the middle of the season. The last quarter of the seaosn is probably the best writing I've ever seen on TV so YNK was right about that. There were times I jumped out of my seat because I was so excited to see a character or they dropped bombs on people (Comissioner laying into to the Mayor and his shit head assistant in last episode about the repercussions of Hampsterdam for example). I could not believe Stringer and Avon sold out each other. I thought for the longest time Avon would be killed and Stringer get arrested.

The domino effect in the climax of the story is something that will probably get better every time I watch it. That was so much fun to see how the politics work on every single level from the city hall, the police department, and on the street.

Didn't know how to take Stringer's death. On one hand I'm glad he was shot by Omar because Stringer is a piece of shit who had D'Angelo killed, but at the same time I wanted McNulty to bust him. Could definitely feel for Jim in this season trying to chase down Stringer then realize Theresa was only using him for insider info for Carcetti about Hamsterdam.

My favorite scene of the season is a toss up. Omar and Brother Mouzone at the construction site walking out from behind the building was fucking awesome. The cop reading his paper then looks to his left to see the media van pull up was very cool imo. The cat was out of the bag and the whole country was about to know about Hamsterdam.

The montage was cool like always, but not as good as season 2. I did get a tad choked up (I'm a loser) when Omar was standing under the bridge and the camera panned and the "Re-elect Frank Sobatka" poster was still hanging up.

Bring on season 4!

HBO created newly edited trailers for old shows, including The Wire, Deadwood, and Six Feet Under.

    ^ Speaking of Deadwood ...

McShane said a Deadwood movie script is in HBO's hands.

I'm cautiously excited about this. I loved the show but I feel like trying to bring all of that talent back together and recreating the same vibe is gonna be tough.

I agree. I love that episode. The fact that it was the penultimate one, and not the actual finale makes it even cooler.

Also BROTHER MOUZONE. Love that dude. And Hamsterdam. Season 3 has the best names ever.

I have to third that. S3E11 is the best episode.

I love the opening scene, the "wild west" stand off between Omar and Brother Mouzone.

I've seen this show all the way through at least four times and I just read about something that I've never noticed.

There is a scene in S3 where there is a clean looking girl being apprehensive about buying drugs in Hamsterdam. Season 4 has a quick scene with a hooker talking to Old Face Andre in his store. Then in season 5 a girl gives a pretty depressing but inspiring speech at Bubbles' NA meeting about how her life spiraled out of control and she started turning tricks to support her habit.

It's the same girl in all three scenes. Probably only two minutes of total screen time over three years but a powerful little story within the story.

This is a pretty damn good callback as well.
The first part is from Season 1, Episode 1. The second is from Season 4, Episode 13.

Yeah I remember her, she definitely has a powerful role in her limited time. The (almost) invisible female junkie who whores herself out to get her fix. Plenty of them on the streets.

Finished Season 4 last night. Depressing as fuck. Took me longer than usual because I was kinda busy the past 3-4 weeks, but again it blew me away. Don't really know what to think of it tbh. Montage got me again as usual. Probably the "worst" so far, but seeing Dukie on the corner sucked. Fist pumped when McNulty walked back into the major crimes HQ. That was fucking awesome.

The season I would turn to in telling people this show is not for everyone. Bubbles getting mugged frequently, the shit life some of these kids were born into, Michael beating the shit out of Kenard, etc just too sad/real for the average TV fan imo.

It really is a novel on TV. It didn't have the climax Season 3 had, but I feel like it's just a build up to Season 5. It was just another chapter laying out how the city and the game are changing for better and for worse.

Another thing that I never noticed......
When McNulty goes to the woman's apartment and The Bunk is destroying "trace evidence" by burning his clothes in her bathtub.....
That woman is Randy's foster - mother, Miss Anna.

Anyway, I started it less than a week ago, I'm now a couple episodes deep on season 2. I hate Ziggy so bad I wanna reach thru my monitor and choke the douche life out of him.

    Re: Official The Wire Thread

Alright, just finished off with the season 2 finale.

I get the whole overall deal with the montage (at least I think), just saying that even with all the good our crew did, it's really ultimately a drop in the bucket compared to all the wrong that's out there and will keep on happening every day no matter what. That's just the real world. But I'm just confused on the last thing with Nick. who was in that car? cause he shoo'd away his protection detail before he walked in the union building (and I guess he thought he potentially would be going into a whole shift of work for the day), which, I think it's maybe kind of ridiculous the US Marshall would so easily allow that, but whatever. So then Nick's walking later, the car's there, but then in the last shot it disappears. was that a hit man that had a change of mind for some reason? It can't have been just some random passerby, not the way that used it in that shot (then panning over in the same spot later to show it wasn't there). I mean when they came back to the closeup on his face right at the end, I figured for sure it'd be a Breaking Bad scenario, last thing you'd get for the season was hearing a gun go off or something.

oh and the girl who was his baby mama, I knew she was reminding me of someone, finally realized it was Rachel McAdams. though I think she was even cuter. But I know much like Anna Kendrick, I'm pretty much in the minority around here of not thinking McAdams is one of the sexiest women alive (also that amazing rack hahaa)

also, I fucking love Prezboluski's(sp?) arc over these first 2 seasons. I mean his first couple scenes at the beginning, you're like oh I'm gonna love hating this fucking dipshit, especially after he blinds the kid and gets to shake it off like it's nothing. But they did such a great job laying out this really redeeming arc for his character, all the way up to decking his asshole father-in-law (and frankly if I was him, those "letter of apology" isn't something I'd be willing to do )

so what the thing with the guy in the car right by Nicky was nothing? sure as hell felt like the camera wanted me to think it was something.

the thing with Prez and Ziggy though, while yea I really hated Prez at first and wanted to slap him, after awhile I was absolutely rooting for the guy and practically wanted to give him a high five. Whereas with Ziggy, he literally never stopped doing things that made it crystal clear to me he was not deserving of the respect he so desperately wanted. Honestly I was half expecting there'd be a point where even Nicky just threw up his hands at him, that even though you're family, you've got to be legally retarded and I don't wanna be around when you self-destruct so you're on your own.

I honestly sometimes wonder if I have some kind of empathy disorder, because I feel like I can so easily put myself in another person's spot and totally assume all that's happening to them, then I have all the emotions/reactions that I WISH they had

christ does Aiden Gillan ever play ANY role where he's not a scheming prick? his American accent... could be a little better. But I've heard worse.

and I'm glad they actually have Jimmy go to the prison and walk thru the "crime scene" of D's supposed suicide to see where it's wrong, but frankly it shouldn't have even gotten that far. I think I said this right after I watched the episode, you'd have to sincerely be retarded not to realize a guy couldn't kill himself that way, there simply wasn't even space for a person to get all the slack out of the belt to tighten it enough to kill yourself. But, I guess if it's just a matter of a prison guard, they ain't exactly caring enough to look too closely.
