True Detective-New HBO Show

New crime show on HBO and it looks pretty damn impressive.

True Detective is a new series on HBO that follows the lives of detectives on various cases. Each season is said to star two new detectives and the viewers follow these characters throughout the solving of a crime. The first season will star Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the eight-part drama series. This is sure to be one of HBO's biggest hits since The Wire. A crime procedural done right: on HBO. Definitely looks like it, some great actors, that alone should be worth watching. But the concept of the show is really interesting to me as well.

Trailers look great, but kinda bummed to hear that they are going to change detectives every season. They look like a great pairing.

I like that they would switch the detectives, it probably allows for them to cast big names in the roles, since they wouldn't have that long commitment.

intriguing 1st episode. pretty slow burning, but it kept me interested. love the interaction between matthew and woody. also squealed at seeing lester freamon and brother mouzone in their small roles.

unfortunately, i might have just gotten everything spoiled for me on imdb. not very fucking cool. just a warning to anyone that goes there. don't bother going to the discussion boards.

Really enjoyed the episode tonight. Some great acting, and the story seems very enticing. Should be a great series.

One thing that came to mind: Matthew M (Rustin) said he used to be in narcotics, yet he goes to that random stripper in the bar for what seemed like a genuine search for Queluudes? I'd think he would have connections, but perhaps not.

Rustin hasnt been in Louisiana but for about 3 months. I think he probably worked narcotics in Texas. I really liked the show. Thought it was extremely well acted. I also take it thtat they possibly like Rustin for the new murder? Anyone else think that?

Just watched. Loved it. Woody and Matt are simply outstanding together. There's just something about the atmosphere/mood and overall tone of the show that has me hooked. Has some seriously awesome potential. Wish the rest of the episodes already aired so I could binge watch.

    Re: True Detective-New HBO Show

just rewatched it cause it was that good

I'm about to talk about what happened in the episode and my thoughts on a few things, so if you haven't watched it yet, you may want to skip this part

there seem to be a lot of hints (camera angles, minute details) that really point to Rustin (mcconaughey) being the killer:

    1. When matt and woody are driving, they cut to a billboard of a woman that was murdered and the caption says "who killed me?" and then they pan right back to Rustin.
    2. When Rustin is looking over the crime scene of the girl with the antlers, they cut to woody and an entire team of police officers heading towards Rustin....all the while Rustin seems to be almost "admiring" the work (his work?)
    3. After the press conference announcing the murder, the audio sort of carries over to the next scene and you hear "this man will be brought to Louisiana justice", and they show Rustin, and then they show the prison that they are about to visit....almost as if inferring that he'll be the one to serve the time.
    4. When they are talking to a citizen in the same town where the little girl (marie) went missing, the citizen looks strangely at Rustin, and he sort of walks behind woody and then turns sideways...almost as if the citizen recognized him, or Rustin was acting weird around him. (this is brilliant execution by the director and mcconaughey, it's so small, yet detailed, the way he moves behind woody and then turns sideways away from him)
    5. Rustin is either a really great detective, or he's the killer....he knew Dora was a prostitute, he referenced the antlers as being a "crown", and the coroner said the same thing. He corrects woody when he says "this guy seems to have made this really personal", and says that it's completely not personal at all, and that this definitely isn't his first kill.
    6. When he shows up drunk at woody's house, it's almost as like he could be depressed because the trail on him is getting really hot, and he wanted a way to take out his emotions.
    6. The final shot when the questioners want information and he says "you better start asking the right fuckin questions", and then of course how long the camera stays with Rustin

I could be completely grasping at straws here, or maybe there is some merit to what I said. In all honesty, I'd prefer if he isn't the killer.

Did anyone notice the repeated occurrence of the cross and christianity and then satanism? and even though Rustin claims to be anti-christian, he wears a cross. Just seems a little odd.

I'm really intrigued to see what sort of falling out Woody and Rustin had. Can't wait for the next episodes!

I don't think Rustin is the killer - his quirkiness makes him too obvious a candidate. But I'll throw this out there...

Possibly an unknowingly double meaning for "Tax Man"? Tax, as in taxidermy...antlers on the victim's head. Which leads me to suspicions of another group - I forget who the men were, but they had a couple deer heads on the wall in the office, when they went to question them.

Taxidermy is going to play a big part in this, me thinks.
