Saw the Hobbit: BOTFA last night. Was a special treat for our work christmas party, but nobody stayed to watch it, so me and a friend/coworker just sat in the theater by ourselves with several handles of liquor and got plastered. Movie was just alright. Roughly 95% of it is just fighting and battles. Damn Bilbo was hardly even in it (seriously, maybe 20 mins of screen time total, if not even less). Whereas Return of the King had like 10 endings, the ending to the final Hobbit movie was extremely rushed. The whole Hobbit trilogy has overall just been so underwhelming in comparison to the LOTR movies. I'd probably give it a 6.5/10.

I actually saw it on one of the movie channels - I'm not sure I could sit through it again even with a Soderbergh/Griffin commentary attached to it. Movie was honestly MST3K worthy.

oh no wait, maybe you misunderstood, the Soderbergh/Griffin commentary track I was talking about is on their 20001 remake of the film, not the original.

Prisoners with Hugh jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. I didn't remember it from 2013 but it sounded good and I got it from Netflix.

It was excellent. It was long at 2.5 hours but a great watch. It was so good that we were both surprised we hadn't heard of it. It was quite suspenseful and had us pausing it at times to discuss what was going on.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Watched Maleficent with the fam for a "family movie night", and whoa boy what a disappointment this ended up being. In it's defense, it's clearly much more aimed for the young girls audience, but they really could have made a great movie with the content. Instead, they just completely fuck up a Disney classic and probably the best Disney villain ever. Instead of keeping Maleficent dark and evil, yet still providing a sympathetic back story, she's nothing more than just a prankster who is just oh so completely charmed creepily watching over the young childish Aurora, that she becomes pretty much the "hero" of the story. what?! the few men characters are either evil (Aurora's father, the villain of the film)or extremely bland and pointless (Prince Phillip). the three fairies that watch over Aurora are extremely annoying, unfunny, and incompetent doofuses that made me cringe whenever they appeared. CGI is overused and looks pretty awful at times. only really good thing is Angelina Jolie's performance, as she really nails Maleficent's tone and personality, especially in the beginning of the movie.

    3/10

and I believe the guy who directed Prisoners is the same guy that Gyllenhaal made Enemy with.

Did anybody see The Maze Runner? For whatever reason I wasn't really much intrigued off the bat as much as I was with say The Hunger Games (just looking at that whole "YA" category), but I don't know, if there's indeed a strong puzzle, big mystery sort of aspect to it, despite the sappy teen element to it I might want to give it a shot.

Saw Battle of the Five Armies. Was decent, but it sucks that The Hobbit trilogy was so underwhelming. I liked them all, but expected more. A solid send off, at least. I'll miss Middle Earth.

Wish Martin Freeman would have played Frodo in LOTR. They would have been that much better.

well okay that was the next thing I was wondering, if it was just the opener of a series, but hell these days that's practically a stupid question. Of course it's going to be something like at least 3 books long.

Finally saw The Wolf of Wall Street on Netflix. Solid, but I couldn't help but think DiCaprio was merely giving us his best Liotta/Hill impression. Maybe that's what Scorcese wanted. My overall take home was: 'been there, done that.' Entertaining, though.

I saw the new Night at the Museum tonight. It definitely was the weakest of the three and felt very short, but overall it was just kinda "cute" and had a very family-friendly tone throughout. I liked it, but not nearly as much as the first two. Was really sad seeing Robin Williams as well.

    Tusk

While I respect Kevin Smith's attempt at depth with these horror movies like this and Red State, I really wish he would return to his 90s form. I heard that he didn't take this film seriously at all because it was intended to finance Clerks III, which his studio wouldn't finance. Justin Long is the obligatory b-list actor backed up by the Sixth Sense Kid (because that's who he'll always be), Haley Joel Osmond. One consistency is the use of Michael Parks, a very underrated actor, as the antagonist, a borderline personality villain, whose motivations are somehow human despite his actions being inhumane. This movie had similar themes to Human Centipede, and honestly, I'm not sure Kevin Smith tried very hard writing the script - which itself originated from a podcast. The ending is, as with most of his movies, an epiphany for at least one of the characters. There is a nice underlying theme of karma in this movie. Don't be a dick or you might end up...well, you'll just have to watch the movie. I'm giving this a 6.5/10, great on a rainy day, but don't go out of your way to see it. As per usual cameos in this movie from folks in the View Askewniverse, including an uncredited appearance by Johnny Depp, as well as Smith's daughter, Harley-Quinn, and Depp's daughter. A non-sequel spinoff is in the works and a third movie as well.

Great film. It's one of those where you have to think/talk about it after to really start to see how great it is. It gets incredibly meta in absurd/funny ways, but because of the subject of the film it's like meta within meta.

Meh, some tense moments don't overshadow some bad writing and acting. The Griever things were just weird...I found it really annoying that those things have to stop their attack, growl/roar, then continue trying to eat the characters. Happened almost every time they were in the scene.

    Wouldn't recommend this to anybody.

One of the best films from last year, for sure. It's unfortunate that it didn't get much attention from the Oscars, but it was a terrific year for movies, IMO, so it's more forgivable.

Okay so I find this rather depressing. We all know it's nothing new the concept that while a director is within post-production on a new film, the studio will hold test screenings to get a general gauge on where they should maybe go with the direction of the final cut. But apparently it's now just as regular to do the same thing before you've shot a single frame, hell before you've even began pre-production in earnest. To take just the plot outline of a new movie to focus groups.

There's details out now of what the plot of Suicide Squad will possibly be from one of these sessions that Warner Brothers just had.

    http://www.flickeringmyth.com/2014/1...uad-movie.html

It just seems so extreme, plus the studio's gotta know there's no way in hell that info then doesn't get out there wide like this.

I don't have Netflix, but these are the documentaries I've seen:

    1. The Internet's Own Boy
    2. The War Around Us
    3. Rich Hill
    4. Road
    5. Kids for Cash
    6. Fed Up
    7. Good Game
    8. Kidnapped for Christ

Last two were awful. Internet's Own Boy was fantastic.

I liked Prisoners. Had it at #7 last year.
