Not necessarily. If he's on the team, I'm going to hope he does his job because I'm a fan of the team and want to see them win. Unfortunately, it will come with the consequence of Chapman individually succeeding. But I still can despise the guy for hitting his girlfriend. Like, if his arm fell off an he never got to pitch again, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.
I get what you're saying. It's hard to explain (especially on a Monday morning at 9 AM). I think you can simultaneously enjoy your team's victory but still not like the person who is helping achieve that. It probably depends on your definition of "root for".
