I'm a little ways through it and so far the "bad" writing has not stuck out to me at all. In fact, the loads of information and beautiful artwork (including awesome maps) outshines any "bad" writing. Which, again, I haven't even really noticed.

People need to remember, this isn't supposed to read the same as one of the ASOIAF books. It's more like a textbook. And written by a maester, nonetheless. So yeah, it doesn't read like the GRRM we're used to. But if anything, it's consistent in the voice of the "maester" writing it.

I definitely recommend the book for any fan. You will be able to find the same information on the Wiki of Ice and Fire. But the way it's laid out in the book, combined with the art and other fun pieces, makes it valuable. You'd like it.

I'm about to start reading Feast for Crows this weekend. I've blasted through the first three in the past few months. I'll watch the series once I've read all five.

I've heard it's the worst of the five books so far.

Nice! Glad you've liked them so far.

You'll definitely notice a slower pace with this one. Just get through it. That's what I tell all first-time readers. Just get through Feast.

Right now, if you're like me, you're just so excited to see what happens next that a slower pace is excruciating. But as I've read the books through again, I enjoyed Feast a lot more. It's chalk full of great details and character development moments. In this last read-through, it had some of my favorite moments.

In short, get through it now; you'll enjoy it later.

    Thanks!

I'm glad I have the benefit of not having to wait a damned decade to find out what happens to all the characters who aren't in FfC.

well it def slows down, the story cant possibly continue its breakneck pace

much of 4 and 5 happen at the same time, and the characters are split up...4/5 is basically one huge book.

Just started A Storm of Swords a few days ago. Only 200 pgs in but this has been the best one yet so far. The chapters with my favorite characters (Tyrion, Arya, Dany) are really good. I like Davos' chapters because he has such a simple view on things. He's the only one who actually thinks rationally.

Re: A Game of Thrones (HBO Series)

Finished SoS yesterday. Was definitely my favorite book so far. I didn't know that all of S3 & S4 came from that book. I thought it just S4 just touched that book and most of the material was from the next book. Good to know I'm not that far behind the series.

The book was interesting because it was so different from the series but completely similar. I think I like how the show played out most of the scenarios better but the book gives so much better of a perspective.

I've heard the fourth book is a drag especially after SoS. Also, read that only certain characters are worth reading in book 4 and everything else is skippable. Any truth to that?

A lot of the changes to the show were done for time sake, and thankfully so. There are some things I wish they kept in the show, like the chain Tyrion built or Stannis staying away from the battle, but its difficult to complain about the show

The 4th books is a drag, but you have to expect things to slow down after SoS- the country was literally just turned upside down, so book 4 is the fallout. Books 4 and 5 run parallel to each other, and focus on different characters, so you'll be missing some of your favorites in book 4...its not bad, just relatively compared to SoS. The most difficult thing (for me) is all the new characters

Skip every Sam chapter except the last few but read everything else. In all seriousness it really isn't a bad read.

But does anyone know why GRRM decided with that book to start chapter titles with nicknames/descriptions instead of just the characters names?

Good to know. I just saw the Amazon reviews were not favorable. I'm really hoping the show eventually uses the epilogue from SoS at some point this upcoming season. That was such a great scene in the book. Fantastic way to finish.

Not sure about the descriptions, but using Sansa or Arya's nicknames was a nod to their changing identity for that specific chapter

I think I've mentioned it before here, but while AFFC was tough my first time through, it's been an absolute gem during re-reads.

After the hurricane that is ASoS, it feels like everything comes to a grinding halt in AFFC. At least in terms of action. By this point in the books, you're so invested in these characters and their arcs that you can't wait to see what happens next, so there is some frustration as things slow down. But as far as building characters, their relationships, and backstory? Man, there are some absolute GEMS in that book. I really enjoyed my latest re-read of it.

But yeah, my advice to first time readers of AFFC is just to get through it. I know it sucks for now, but you'll appreciate it later.

backstory really shines in AFFC. it's tough to want to read the first time through naturally

There's like two random Brienne chapters where this guy Septon Meribald escorts them to Saltpans. His character doesn't move anything forward at all but he has a couple really great monologues. One was about the difference between broken men and criminals or something but after reading it I was in awe that some minor character who probably will never show up again could be so great in this big world with dragons and white walkers and everything. It really is the little things with AFFC

So in a few weeks, they're going to be playing the last 2 episodes from season 4 in 150 IMAX theaters, along with an extensive trailer for the upcoming season.

Anyone think they'll check that out?

alright so, the kind of detail that only weirdo me would happen to think of. Since a small thing like this obviously wasn't said in the show, I'm asking book readers if it's in there. cause I've been binging season 4 again since yesterday and now it's come back to Tyrion's trial taking place, does it say anything in the book of how it's decided which Kings Landing citizens got to actually attend and get to witness it? like was it a ticket that you had to buy to get in, or some free first come/first serve kind of sign up until the bleachers were filled?
Presumably even far more people than that would liked to have been able to watch it.

no, there wasnt any description that i can remember. You just assume that the families that matter are there. And it was pretty quick, so its mainly anyone that was at the wedding

I enjoyed how the trial (and Oberyn approaching Tyrion about being his champion) went down on the show better than the book.

well I suppose theoretically that anyone who witnessed the trial in person also attended the wedding, but definitely not the other way around. There were clearly HUNDREDS of people as 'wedding guests' (if not reaching into quadruple digits), but obviously far less made it into the trial hall.

going back along the season like I have been here I was just thinking, how awesome would it be if this was like all just an incredibly elaborate origin story, the best one of all time about this pair of sisters who became ultimately the hero and the villain. seeing Arya slowly come along, getting more badass and learning to fight better, meanwhile as Sansa gets turned to the dark side. When you see her first walk down the stairs wearing that black dress as she comes toward Baelish, I started hearing the Darth Vader breathing in my head

It never explicitly said. I assumed it was people of nobility and higher birth. So basically a bunch of people who were at the wedding or had the title to get themselves in.

Seen all the episodes and am nearing the end of Book 1. So good. Hopefully can get caught up on the books by April and also want to rematch the entire series before that too. I never would've thought I would become so obsessed over a series like this, especially one of this genre which I never liked before.
