Favorite Ants Christmas Movie - Part 5 (of 5): CLASSICS/NOSTALGIA (1 vote)

Okay actually just figured, I might as well go ahead and drop this one now. After all, I like the idea of the final championship round starting Friday morning (surely there will be more people on here than on Saturday), and so might as well get the last category as much exposure time between now and then to accumulate as many users as possible.

This is extremely serious business, after all.

for anyone who may disagree or have issue with A Christmas Story being in this one... first off, the fact that it actually takes place back in the same generation when each of these other classics were made helps. The only other two places it could've been put were PG Family, or the Comedy, but all things considered, I felt like in tone and vibe it was closer to the few on this list than any of the 20 others between those two. For most of us it does seem like more of a nostalgic classic.

Take note, since there are so few options in this last one, this poll is single vote only. And don't worry, as will be the final championship round as well.

Thanks for clarifying. I've been sitting at my computer for 5 minutes trying to make multiple selections.

It's a Wonderful Life. If it loses to A Christmas Story we should shut down Ants.

well c'mon, I mean I gave it an honest try, I did put the "1 vote" in the thread title

but I was joking with Casey about this last night, given what I've so often done with these inane silly ideas of mine, people might very well have thought even the very last championship poll was going to be multiple choice, but no I want a clear winner. We can leave elaboration for the posts.

well and that's the other thing that appealed to me about putting Christmas Story here (which I maintain is entirely reasonable), it would help make this last, and easily smallest, extremely cutthroat right out of the gate
but fans will also have to make some really hard decisions tomorrow on the last one as well anyway

Gotta go with Scrooge, that '51 version is one of the better adaptations, Alastair Sim was terrific. It's my favorite Christmas story so, had to pick it with apologies to A Christmas Story and It's A Wonderful Life.

Die Hard is in the action poll.

Since when is Princess Bride a Christmas movie? I mean, it's been quite a while since I've seen the movie, but I don't remember Christmas playing a role in that movie whatsoever.

Die Hard is a Christmas movie in the VERY least form.

And to play Devil's Advocate, you could argue It's a Wonderful Life is barely a Christmas movie (though it absolutely belongs and should win on this poll). Probably a good 80% of the movie has nothing to do with the holiday, but is synonymous with Christmas because the movie's most crucial section takes place during the event.

I only first saw It's A Wonderful Life in its entirety no more than, I'd say, maybe 6-7 years ago, and I was pretty damn shocked to learn exactly what you're talking about here.

That's an awfully big reach - not saying your claim is untrue, but having Christmas lights featured in your movie doesn't make it a Christmas movie.

Christmas at least plays some role in Die Hard - it provides the set up of the plot with the company Christmas party.

Which in no way shape or form makes it a Christmas movie. Christmas is not the theme.

It's an popcorn variety action flic about a robbery/hostage situation.

Calling it a Christmas movie has become the trendy thing to do, but it's not.

I'm really hoping Jake was just being sarcastic about the Princess Bride, otherwise he may have indeed really gone round the bend this time and I oughta know.

and I gotta defend Die Hard. I don't think Christmas necessarily has to play the central theme in the movie to make it legit. It has enough to do with the story to qualify.

But there are constant references made to Christmas in the dialogue and it plays a tangible role in the motivations' of the characters - particularly with an extra driving force in the need for a reunion among the McClane family.

I agree that it's not first and foremost a Christmas movie (because you could essentially make the same movie at any time of the year), but the Christmas setting adds something to the film. It shouldn't be on this particular poll - Kevin placed it exactly where it should be in the action one, but I definitely don't refute the consensus that it is in the most offbeat way, a Christmas film. Again, in the very least form and in the most liberal definition.

2.8% of dialogue in Die Hard is related to Christmas.

And it features Christmas in Hollis, maybe the greatest hip hop song about Christmas ever.

Really, REALLY close between A Christmas Story and It's a Wonderful Life. It's a Wonderful Life wins by a fingernail though.

and Casey knows what he;s talking about

I agree that it's not first and foremost a Christmas movie (because you could essentially make the same movie at any time of the year), but the Christmas setting adds something to the film. It shouldn't be on this particular poll - Kevin placed it exactly where it should be in the action one, but I definitely don't refute the consensus that it is in the most offbeat way, a Christmas film. Again, in the very least form and in the most liberal definition.
I think this is pretty much the clincher.

Hans and Co. choose to go forth with their plan on Christmas because they know no one will be there and that those who are there are having a good time. Christmas plays a pretty big part in driving the plot. It's the one holiday where almost everything is shut down.

Jesus H Christ, I can't believe someone seriously worked all that out, that's ridiculous If someone's seemingly basing the crux of their argument on a literal, statistical analysis of the thing like that, you're not starting off on a very strong foot, for my money. It goes back to what Casey was talking about earlier, with IAWL, you can't look at it from that technical of a perspective. I mean I don't really know how/why this is apparently a thing now, whether Die Hard is a "legit" Christmas movie or not, I really didn't expect to hear this sort of angle. A lot of people do associate it with the holiday to a certain degree, and have fun, positive memories from it. That's it.

hell there's probably been more discussion of Die Hard here in this thread than there was in the original Action one
