Re: Chris Cornell dead at 52

Just watched the performance of Fell on Black Days from last night, he looks like a bit of a mess at that point

This actually reminds me of what Dave said about his son's taste in music on Colbert. All these grunge guys who wrote really angry depressing music, seem to kill themselves or take enough drugs to die before the age of 50, and happy music man Dave Matthews will probably live until 95

ABC affiliate in Detroit spoke with someone that worked backstage last night and the guy said Cornell seemed to be in good spirits and he didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

I never found Soundgarden's music to be depressing. Angry at times, sure.

It's more of a comparison of grunge vs. whatever DMB is. Dave literally made this comparison himself

Sunshower is a masterful song. Guy could wail.

    But it's all right
    When you're all in pain
And you feel the rain come down
    Oh it's all right
    When you find your way
    Then you see it disappear
    Oh it's all right
    Though your garden's gray
    I know all your graces
    Someday will flower
    Oh in the sweet sunshower
    Oh in the sweet sunshower
    In the sweet sunshower

well after John Spencer and Greg Giraldo, this morning now makes the third time ever in my life (or well, least in my adulthood back as I can remember) I actually cried upon hearing the news of a celebrity death.

funny thing with the timing though, cause I happened to be fully up and awake far earlier than technically I needed to be for work and so heard about this back at like 6:30-7am, had all the time to look around at news and whatnot... then literally in like the 5 minutes before I'm out the door for work I see the word about Roger Ailes dying today as well. I mean I'm not a dick it's not like I'd celebrate or anything given the wretched human being he was, but I just remember thinking right away, well sure as hell won't be shedding a single tear for him.

Yeah, Cornell wasn't Cobain writing songs like "I hate myself and want to die".

One line that I have been pondering today comes from a song I always thought was written specifically for Andrew Wood, but the lyric seems very poignant today.

He hurt so bad like a soul breaking, but he never said nothing to me…

well, while it really sucks that it has an additional personal resonance today, it's pretty safe to say it was indeed originally written in a tributing, cathartic way to Andy. Even he was pretty open about that since way back when, as were other Temple Of The Dog members (which itself was largely like a therapeutic response).

yea this point I've already pondered a couple times. That even people who consider themselves big fans of his/Soundgarden's, can you not reconcile the idea of someone who's got any kids committing suicide, especially kids not even into adulthood. like does that alone sorta make it a dealbreaker for you, do you feel like you ultimately can't indulge at all even like the worst sort of depression because you view it as bailing on your kids and that's just unacceptable.

Watched that earlier too. Beautiful version which made me think of my son. Gave him a bigger hug than normal today.

I'm pretty sure he INXS'd himself.

Possibly while face timing his wife.

I never thought of his music as depressing either, but thinking back across his work, titles like Pretty Noose, Like Suicide and Say Hello 2 Heaven have a whole new context.

I know he had his demons with addiction.

UnPlugged in Sweden in probably my favorite compilation of music by Chris. I grew up listening to Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, Audioslave and was completely blown away by everything he has done. Shocked by the news, saddened by the news, and completely confused by the happenings. I will never try to speculate what led to the decision but will constantly wonder why. RIP Chris. Your music touched me more than you'll ever believe. Say Hello 2 Heaven

    Source?

    You're assuming.

She contacted someone else there because she knew something was up. That's all we know.

By all accounts he was in happy spirits and gave zero signs of depression.

    This could be completely accidental.

The only time I got to see him perform was Hangout Fest 2012. We went for DMB and I remember walking to the festival that first evening of the fest to check him out. He was playing a solo acoustic show during sunset on the beach, and it was simply perfect. By far my favorite set of that weekend. Never got huge into Soundgarden, but I loved his solo acoustic material. His Artist Confidential show that was on Sirius XM last year was phenomenal...I know there are YouTube clips of that show so definitely check those out. RIP to a true musical icon...very sad day.

yep, Stone Gossard composed the music.

Eddie Vedder turned it into Footsteps.

Chris Cornell turned it into Times Of Trouble.

Possibly while face timing his wife.

By all accounts he was in happy spirits and gave zero signs of depression.

    This could be completely accidental.
As are you. Yes, it would sure be a dead giveaway (bad choice of words, I know) if she was FaceTiming him, and she saw him with a belt or whatever around his neck suffocating.

We're told Vicky tried reaching Chris in his hotel room early Thursday morning but he was not answering. She became concerned and asked someone to call hotel security. That's when Chris' body was discovered.
That's the thing with depression though, it doesn't matter how you perceive yourself to others. Sometimes all it takes is one moment of feeling too overwhelmed and it's enough for you.

We all know what the possibilities are, but adding the "possibly while Face timing his wife" wasn't necessary. The important thing to consider is that the med examiner specifically said "suicide by hanging", which to me sounds as if he hanged himself and at some point whatever he used to hang himself broke and he fell to the floor.
