I think this is how most of America feels. We really don't care if it's 1 or 2 states, we just want the region/world to be as stable as possible.

Except that Sec Mattis has consistently stated that a 2 state solution is the only viable way for peace and that it was the administrations official position on inauguration day.
But Trump didn't want to say that, because Israel has been explicit in saying that they'll only accept a 1-state solution.
So Trump didn't want to upset Netanyahu, so he gave that non-answer. But there are much more diplomatic ways to say that.
I just thought it was funny, and "Trumpian" - don't necessarily have an issue with the position of having no position
