Okay, topping this thread because no need to have two, and this was the original.

So has anyone ever run on a track before? Likes/dislikes?

    I have.

Tracks are going to be for faster running because it's a flat surface, but I always preferred running on grass or something softer, because I'm not that graceful of a runner (STOMPSTOMPSTOMP). Grass can hide a bumpy surface though.

I hate running on a track it is really boring to me, even worse than a treadmill because at least on a treadmill you can have a TV there.

    Cross-Country FTW!

I actually just started running again yesterday... I am starting out slow, but it feels great to be doing it again after a almost 8 year break

I ran 2.1 miles yesterday and 2.4 today, I am hoping to be able to build a little each day until I can get into the 5 mile range

I do a lot of miles and speedwork on tracks- but the one I do the majority of that crap on is gravel/cinder. I hadn't run on a synthetic surface track in like 10 months till about a month ago. Even though it's a rubber surface, it's still harder than the gravel and I pulled an abductor muscle doing some speedwork. I don't really enjoy the rubberized tracks, but they are the place where you're gonna throwdown your fastest times.

Nice to see the running thread getting some love.

Just want to let everyone know, if you ever have the chance to run/jog/walk though or around Central Park, DO IT!!! I was just in NYC and ran in the park two days. Would have loved to have seen some foliage on the trees, but it was beautiful none the less. Did a 10K race in the park on the second day and it went well. Lance Armstrong ran in the race as well and did much better then I, but I still had fun.

I just ran 5.5 miles on the treadmill, a few hills, but not many. I'm training for a half-marathon, I think?

Ran 2.5 miles today, I am really happy because I have been making steady progress, I have been able to add 0.2 miles every day so far

Anyone have any tips to help side-stitches though? I have been getting them a bit

Nice job on adding miles slowly. Last thing you want to do is get hurt.

Side-stitches... for me, I breathe in through the nose, filling my lungs and diaphragm as much as I can. Then exhale through the mouth. In short, I try and 'stretch out' the side-stitches be expanding the chest and abdomen.

After a few of those, mine go away. Might help or not, but at least it is something to try. Keep up the good work.

You know I had a bottle of water with me today but it was really hard, because I am so used to spitting it out right away when I am playing hockey that it didn't feel natural to drink it

Ok, so I just got back from witnessing the Boston Marathon, and if one ever needed a boost to keep their training going, that was it. What a great time. I would encourage anybody here to go and experience the BM once in your life. It is more then worth it.

I don't know if qualifying is something I can do, but I am going to push myself an make every effort to.

Do the NYC marathon. No qualifier necessary and if you don't get in this year, you most likely will next year.

I was looking into the NYC marathon. I think it will be on my list for next year. I have friends that I can crash with in NYC so that saves on a hotel.

I like the no qualify for NYC, but call me weird, I would like to know that I made it on my own merits and not via lottery. Then again the qualify time for my age groups is sub-3 hours, so maybe the lottery is the better way to go.

I am trying to get back into shape. I have never ran for long periods of time outdoors (i.e. track or cross country)(excluding sports as a kid), but I feel like running solely for the purpose of running is quite different then running in sports. I weight lift and run on various indoor cardio machines (not on a regular basis recently) I was wondering how should I start out, how long should i shoot for without stopping. How low should I set the bar?

***I am also in the process of quitting smoking, so my lungs/body is not in the best of shape?***

I quit smoking after 13 years on March 3rd and started training for a half-marathon the following day. Good luck with the quit and running. It has really helped me be motivated to continue the run. I started out with 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week running on a treadmill, until I could get outside. I'm following a half-marathon training schedule, but I would say don't run less than 2 miles at a time. 3 should be a challenge and a good place to pace yourself. That first mile is always a b***h anyways, so you have to do more than one.

Start out easy. It's nice outside so run for 10 minutes a day for 3-4 days then slowly increase your pace. It's better to start easy so you don't kill yourself and you don't get discouraged.

I would LOVE to know how many people who NEVER run can just decide to get out one day and run for ten minutes "just to start out slow" and not want to die, if not while they're doing it, the next day. I never run, which is why when I do try to run I feel like I'm gonna die in about two minutes. I'm active, I walk around all day, I'm not UNhealthy. But I seriously don't think you can just go from no running to running for ten minutes.

Each person needs find out what works best them when it comes to running. There is no one program fits all thing. My wife found a podcast called ''From couch to 5k". She loves it. I consists of a program that you can do at whatever pace, working up to a 5k.

I found that too. That seems more realistic to me. And even that is outside the comfort zone of a non-runner, but first time out running for ten minutes, that's not realistic.

You are correct. Going from nothing to 10 minutes is the quick way to ending your running adventure. Start slow, build up, be smart, and find out works best for you. If you feel like pushing one day, but not the next, that is fine. Find a pace and have fun.

In the new issue of Runners World, they had what I thought was a great new runners/beginners workout plan. If I find the link on their website I will post it.

I'm up to 20 minutes again. My cardio is way ahead of my running. I ripped through 60 minutes on the eliptical last Sunday, but I'm just carrying too much weight and my muscles are still trying to catch up.

Nice job! Were you the one dealing with some knee issues or just had surgery about 6-8 months ago?

I had some issue in my hip. The doctor I went to still has no idea what the hell was going on, but 6 months of doing nothing seems to have fixed it. If I wouldn't have ate like a horse for 6 months I'd be doing a lot better.

I'm not tired after 20 minutes, but my calves are just burning. I'm lifting legs twice a week, so I'm hoping to get my strength caught up with my cardio by the time Summer starts.
