I haven't used Excel for realz since I was a Social Work major at Texas and had to take SW Stats, which was when I was a Freshman... 16 years ago. So yea, any middle school kid is probably infinitely more proficient than I.

No, certainly not. No biggie at all, I was just curious and I know you like this type of stuff.

    What I have will work.

I don't have any kids but I honestly think that Excel or some equivalent should start being taught in like 7th or 8t grade and kind of be required as you move through school.

I would equate it to learning how to play any instrument. Besides being able to play that particular instrument, it will unlock your brain in so many ways that will pay dividends down the road.

Well, what I would have done is just used the standard SUM(B1:C1) formula, which clearly doesn't contain the IF statement which takes up more calc time. With that, you can highlight all of column D and set the conditional formatting to change the font white when the value in cell D isn't equal to 0.

But you'll be totally fine the other way. I'm used to dealing with 69k rows and lots of columns of formulas, so calc time comes into play. (But that's how it would work since you were curious.)

It's an amazing tool, I wish I knew more about it. It's like the ocean, I can only see a little bit of it and the best is way in there.

I learned how to use spreadsheets in middle and high school on a fundamental level, but never took any classes in high school that utilized it beyond that; and I took some advanced accounting classes (we used graph paper for fuck's sake). Of course, the internet was still AOL chatrooms at that point too, so I'm sure times have changed.

    Definitely a skill I wish I had.

Another skill I wish I had. Allison can play piano and played french horn in the Longhorn Band. Her brother can play pretty much anything on piano or drums by ear. Their mom had them in piano lessons from the time they were toddlers.

Yeah, I wish I could play an instrument. The reason I compare Excel to playing an instrument is because, from what I've been told, learning another instrument is easier and the next easier after that. Once I learned Excel, every other application came almost naturally whereas prior everything was foreign.

It really is. I've created some things in Excel that literally people wouldn't know was in Excel because you can "bend" the program so much more than people realize.

Like language. Definitely heard that once you become fluent in a second language, it becomes easier to pick up others.

Really wish I'd been forced to learn Spanish from K on, like kids in other countries do with English.

Yeah, for sure. I'm the same way. Wish I would have learned and instrument starting younger and taken my Spanish more seriously.

The difference with Excel is that it's probably prevalent in like 80% of jobs. Not that the other two don't have amazing benefits but if I had to prioritize, it'd be Excel first.

    Ideally do all three.

No doubt on the practicality of Excel in the real world.

With Spanish here though, even working shit jobs you can get a couple dollar an hour bump over your coworkers if you're fluent.

I know enough to do the business I need to do with non-English speaking folk (and they usually know enough English to meet me half way), but not nearly enough to trouble shoot complicated stuff and earn that pay bump.

Oh, yeah. Like I said, a combination of being multi-lingual, app/logic comprehensive, and creativeness (I attribute being able to play an instrument and create music to being creative) is like the trifecta of education, IMO.

That's not to say that my life would be radically different if I could speak another language or play an instrument but I can't see where it would hurt my overall brain function and, to your point, afford me a few extra bucks in my job.

I suppose I should've mentioned it wasn't in date format. It was literally as if someone just typed "Apr 1 2014 12:00AM" into the cell. So even when I selected "short date" it didn't do anything. I got a coworker to do it. He's an Excel master and it took him like 10 minutes. Used 4 or 5 different functions. Really impressive.

I wish I had copied the formula before I changed it to a value.

    Probably something like this..

    =DATE(MID(A1, FIND(201, A1, 1), 4), MONTH(LEFT(A1,3)&1), MID( A1, 4, 2)*1)

    Column A: numeric month (e.g. 12)
    Column B: year (2016)

There is no day but I just have to make them all the 1st of the month. So in the example above I'm trying to get that to read 12/1/2016
