No, you don't have to get it. CoD is still free-to-play online, and even more than that, 90% of Elite is free, and available to everyone. But Elite Premium includes all DLC for the game ($60 dollars worth), and includes early access to said DLC, for less money. Also includes other stuff for hardcore gamers, including contests for real prizes.

Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

They said the price for Hardened was going up on the site, but it's not there yet. If it's $99.99, which had floated around before, it's a must buy. That'd basically be The game at the regular $59.99 price, Elite at a discounted $40.00, and then the book for free.

If you end up paying less altogether for everything it makes a bit more sense to buy it now. At least to me it does. Although I only bought 1 of the DLCs for BO, I think I bought all of them for MW2. Getting early access is a nice incentive too.

I have not, as they actually have contained the game really well. The people playing it out in LA right now really are the first members of the public to play it.

Some of my friends/other youtube directors got to play it last night at a pre-XP media event, and I heard all about it, but I haven't played it yet. Although they say it's really fast and fun. Of course, problems in first person shooters don't usually show themselves until hours and days and weeks of play, but they said it was super fun and fast paced to pick up.

I've never been much of a "premium edition" game buyer (bonus content is rarely worth it), but if you get Elite for a discounted price that's a bigger incentive for me to do so.

Thanks for all the info though.

Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Sounds like they're making it a shit-ton easier to get "kill" streaks, which is the opposite direction I was hoping they'd go. And the assault branch is going to be what 95% of people choose. Visually it looks pretty much the same as the last 2. If I do buy a multiplayer FPS this year I can't see myself getting this over Battlefield.

Well you gotta think about the people that don't give a crap about k/d or anything and are always there to cap a territory. It now gives an incentive to be a team player and not be penalized for not really being that good at killing (although in theory you'd expect that to be a must in a FPS shooter lol).

I like the idea of seperating the killstreaks into offensive and defensive. Although I'm more than capable of consistently getting the highest killstreaks if I ran them, I always hated the people that would run the highest killstreaks with the purpose of just killwhoring (the 8/9/11 streakers from BO for example. 7/11/25 streaks for MW2 comparison). There's really no need for one person to have that kind of firepower, because then the objective games turn into camping for killstreaks.

Besides, with the way BO is setup, if you play with people that are good enough, 1 blackbird will lead to an endless chain of Blackbirds, Choppers, Gunships and Dogs, and then the opposing team has almost no chance of mounting a comeback because it becomes impossible to even camp once those chains start. It's a good idea in theory, but with the ease of getting 8 kills it can lead to games getting out of hand quickly.

Then the other thing you have to think about is if you run a team of 6 offensive guys versus 6 defensive guys for example, the 6 defensive guys are going to fare much better, simply because they'll be capable of supplying UAVs all game and it will stunt the offensive players killstreaks (unless there's just a huge skill difference).

Right, and I agree. But you've played a COD game before. You know the community. Can you honestly say that a good portion of them aren't going to choose the branch where they get to kill as many people as possible? Sure, the people worth playing with may choose support, but nothing that I have learned from my years of COD playing has led me to believe that the average COD player is a selfless team player.

Edit: This system seems built for full teams of friends playing together. Problem is, that's not the case most of the time. I would say groups of 2, maybe 3 are the most common, outside of the lone player.

if all you do is play TDM against random people, then ya most of the time everybody is going to run assault. but if you get into the objective games and/or play with a clan, people will use the others.

We'll see. And I'm talking casual players, so clans don't count.

No, you're right, most will probably choose the offensive. I know plenty of people that run the 8/9/11 killstreaks just for the sake of getting a ton of kills. I know a guy that has like a 3.5 k/d overall, but his highest gun k/d is a 3.1 (shows how frequently he killwhores with the high streaks). He's also a big TDM guy, simply because there's no need to contribute to an objective and he can camp for his streaks.

I've always been more of a defensive guy myself. I've never played a game of BO without the Spy Plane except for a few times we all ran RC's as a team in S&D, so I'd probably take the defensive streaks and use the Blindside perk.

Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Kind of a big thing I've forgotten to mention: you pick killstreaks for each class, not for the match. So if you get into a match and you're getting crushed, and your primary class has really high killstreaks, you can switch to a backup class with lower or support killstreaks.

The one thing I'm not liking about killstreaks at the moment is that they both stack and are cyclical. So again, as soon as you get your top killstreak, your streak starts over. So if you're on a dominant team where your teammates can keep you alive while using killstreaks, there's no reason why your ac-130 can't get you another ac-130, and so on, until you die.

Hardened edition confirmed for $99.99. So again, that's the regular retail game for $59.99, Elite year membership at a 10 dollar discount at $40.00, and then all the other stuff (the 100+ page booklet, the extra Elite perks of being a founding member, etc.) for free.

Actually, not at all. Recoil is about even with Black Ops, maybe a little less, but so far no one's found this game's ACR, which was a laser.

And the shotgun is, again, somewhere in between Black Ops and MW2. I think this might end up being the perfect shotgun range. Shotguns were a novelty in Black Ops, you used them just to use a shotgun, not to do well. If they're going to be a primary, which they are in MW3, they have to be worth it. If the MW2 shotguns had been primaries, they would've been well balanced. These are actually less powerful than those.

Although one of your weapon proficiencies with shotguns is to increase range, right to about the MW2 range.

It should. It's built on the same engine. If you're buying CoD games just for multiplayer, until a new engine comes out (probably with the new consoles), you're going to be paying for what you expect. But there's enough change in here, bundled with an interesting campaign and really two different interesting Spec Ops modes, that it's worth it for me. But if you're just getting it for multiplayer, and none of the gameplay updates does anything for you, then by all means, don't get it.

Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Turns out they did announce a new gametype, but it wasn't the one I had heard of. In this new actual one, it's basically capture the flag meets king of the hill. Each team has a flag, and if you capture the enemy flag, your team scores a point for however long you hold the flag. As soon as the flag holder dies, the flag respawns with the other team.

Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

This is a new piece of info that I just got, that really changes my thoughts on the balance of killstreaks. The assault and the specialist pointstreak trees are traditional, where your streak stops with death. But the support one, death doesn't matter. If you never put together a streak of kills, but go 12-18, your twelfth kill will get you a stealth bomber. That's a huge advantage of the support loadout.
