Re: John Mayer

sweet show!

setlist:

Heartbreak Warfare
Crossroads
Vultures
Perfectly Lonely
Assassin
Waiting
All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye
Half of My Heart
Bigger Than My Body
Edge of Desire
Why Georgia
Gravity

Encore:
Who Says
Friends, Lovers or Nothing

two things of note;

1. white screen; i think they took a page out of the dmb book .. except, this screen was on a track and opened like a curtain. they then took it to another level and projected movies on it (unlike a solid image from DMB).

2. lights .. fenton, you gotta get these bad boys! ltalk about technology ... these new lights were kick ass. basically, there are 8 of them hung from a ring above john, and they rotate up and down, and swivel back and forth ... these things were HUGE .. they come down to about 12' off the ground to 30' in the air ... pretty sweet. they were remote controlled and were able to shine a spot on everyone in the band. they rotated around the band at a pretty swift pace which made the light show almost 3-D if you will.

good stuff from mayer ..... but in the end, nothing beats the boys.

    Re: John Mayer

John Mayer is a brilliantly talented artist. I remember when I was in high school I used to go to the local Graywhale cd store and just buy cds that looked good without ever hearing them. They had this "John Mayer: Room For Squares" on the back rack for like $8.99. This was back when he was nothing. I bought it cuz it looked cool, and was hooked ever since. His albums have gotten progressively better, particularly in their musicality, with the peak being Continuum. In my opinion, it's one of the top albums of our generation. Pure brilliance. I, like many of you, was disappointed by Battle Studies. It's good, but sounds very empty compared to his other works. Isn't it funny how the album he releases just as he is really getting caught up in the whole celebrity/fame thing (paparazzi, tabloids, love life plastered all over) is his worst? To me, when I listen to the album, I hear a man who is so caught up in appearance and fame and all the social benefits of such, but then he arrives to an empty home and just feels alone. I don't know if that's the case, just how it sounds to me.

I still really like the new album. I love how Mayer changes it up with every record. My rankings of his major label releases:
    Continuum
    Try (JM Trio)
    Room For Squares
    Heavier Things
    Battle Studies

    Yeah, it was really good!

I loved Steve Jordan's solo before Waiting on the World to Change, amazing stuff! Also the unexpected Fleetwood Mac's "Thunder" cover interpolation on Half of my Heart took me by surprise. The solos where really great all over the show; he has an incredible band to back him up.

Assassin was real good, some extra solos during the song, but it's funny that the vocals sounded almost playback for me, he either was doing a carbon copy version of the album or it was playback (maybe the fact that he sang that one using one of those Britney Spears' mics gave me that impression ).

I think the show was kind of short, I wish he had played more stuff... but all in all it was a very good show!

    Re: John Mayer

anybody else hear about this impromptu set the other night in nyc? john sent out this tweet at around midnight thurs. night:

    Quote:
3am show at Village underground... Going to play an hour set. $10
it was just john by himself, on acoustic. apparently only about 80 people showed up.

    Neon
    MSM
    Stop This Train
    Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright
    83
    Free Fallin
    Never Tear Us Apart
    Half of my Heart
    Who Says
    Why GA
    Message In A Bottle
    Perfectly Lonely
    Slow Dancing
    NST
    Steppin’ Out tease
    Wonderland

there are a lot of videos popping up on youtube. i think someone ripped the audio, as well. it's just really cool to see a popular, mainstream artist who sells out auditoriums doing stuff like this.

he also helped out an underage fan who showed up to get into the show.

    Quote:
it all started with i tweet i saw before going to bed from john mayer, who for the past few months, stopped using twitter.

“3am show at Village underground… Going to play an hour set. $10.”

i was about to go to bed when i saw this. then something sparked in me. something that said “GET THE FUCK OUT OF BED AND GO.” so, i did.
i threw on the shorts i just took off and picked out a clean shirt from my closet. i rushed to put on a little makeup, grab my keys, wallet, and camera.
i scribbled the address on my left hand in sharpie ink and rushed down the stairs of my building.
i ran to 1st avenue to catch a cab. as i sat in the cab, the adrenaline was rushing. i wanted to scream out the windows, “THIS IS NEW YORK, BABY”
so i arrived to the venue, the villiage underground. but i knew what was coming; it was a bar. i would not be allowed in without an i.d. at first i thought, “damn this would have been a great time to have a fake i.d.”
so i tried to get past the bouncer. no luck. i stood outside that bar, leaning against the pole holding some parking sign that i didn’t give a shit about. i wasn’t going to leave. there were other dissappointed faces with me. ones who were probably my age as well.
“i’m so upset like WHAT THE HECK” were the words of a girl dressed in a far-too-skanky dress for just going to see john mayer.
“i know. it sucks” i replied.
    “whatever i’m leaving” she said.
“i’m staying… i have a good feeling about tonight” even though i had the feeling of utter failure stained in my chest.
“good luck. i tried everything on those bouncers.”

twenty minutes go by. i keep making sad faces at the bouncers. the other people my age leave.
    then it happens.
john mayer, in the flesh, coming from my left side. he was wearing light seersuckered pants, a white shirt, hipster glasses, and his guitar strapped to his back. my mouth fell. i had no words, so i began digging through my bag to grab the sharpie. because as i always said to myself, if i ever met john mayer, i would have him autograph me and then i would get it tattooed to me. i think i almost grabbed a tampon out of my bag instead.
he got closer, so i acted.
“john! they won’t let me in because i’m 19” i said
“what? you’re coming with me tonight.” he said
“really?!” my heart was about ready to fall out of my mouth i was so happy.
    “yeah. what’s your name?”
    “elisabeth!”
“elisabeth!? elisabeth!” he hugs me and keeps his arm around me. “it’s been so long. it’s been since becky’s party 5 years ago!” john has a weird sense of humor. i love it.
“yeah man. that was a craaaazy party.”
“liz? can i call you liz?”
    “yeah?”
“do you promise not to drink tonight if i bring you in with me?”
“i promise. can we get a picture together?”
“don’t worry about that now.” his photographer steps in and takes a few of us. “just save that for later.”
“my hair looks so bad. i literally got out of bed and came.” my hair was big… really, really big.
“nah. it’s cool. your hair matches the weather.” it had been raining all day in new york.
“is this really happening?” i asked this to him
he smiles “come on, let’s go inside sweetheart.”

so i walk past the bouncers who shot me down earlier with john’s hand on my shoulder. as i passed one bouncer i said, “this is my lucky night, and i’m glad you’re here to experience it.” he laughed and shook my hand.

john and i made our way down the stairs and he said something else like, “you’re with me tonight, alright elisabeth?”
“soooo can i get in for free?”
“i just said you’re with me! of course!”
we walk up to where i should’ve been paying if i had been a 21 year old allowed in the bar.
a woman who works there asks, “john, who’s with you?”
“she’s with me” and he squeezes me a little with his arm. he also points to his awesomely chill photographer and we go in.

i walk in with his arm still around my shoulder and wish him luck. he thanks me. and i thank him.
he begins to set up on stage as the group of 40 people clap and cheer some. i blow a kiss at him and he returns it.

his nearly two hour set was filled with many jokes about himself, some of my favorite songs, and lots of smiling.

at the end of the show. i shook his hand and thanked him again for bringing me. he said “anytime elisabeth. thank you for coming.”
he remember my name after two hours.

i left the venue and it was light out. i know how truly lucky i am to be alive and living in new york.
that apparently came from some girl's blog. don't know how valid it is, but i don't see why someone would make something like that up.

that's pretty crazy...john has his non-douchey days too it would seem.

my favorite part: "john mayer remembered my name after two hours!!" damn that john mayer has the entire female population wrapped around his finger. and by finger, i mean cock.

jesus he needs to chill on the narration of his own life on stage, its getting kind of ridiculous. i cant even listen to bold as love from where the light is because of that awful speech he gives during the song. he thinks he is so damn important

anyways, good to hear he's ditching pop. i wish he would just release an album instead of saying stuff like this but whatever. battle studies is pretty pathetic considering what he's capable of. maybe he's realizing how over saturated he has become in the past 3 years.

yea the first 3 and try are good albums. songs like Home Life, Back To You, Clarity, Come Back To Bed, Home Life ..I do think Continuum is my person favorite album though.

So he's doing a folk album now? Good for him. He's constantly talked about how tired he gets of playing the pop radio hits, so a big to him for moving on and writing what he wants to write. I'll be sure to check him out when he comes back.

By the way he had a really cool post on his blog the other day:

"Was handed this letter at a meet and greet on my last show of the tour:
    “Dear John,
My name is James Thomas. I’m 17 years old and I’m so happy that I was finally able to meet you tonight. You changed my life by inspiring me to pick up a Martin and a Strat when I saw you live for the first time in 2008. I really understand your music and connect to what you’re saying in your songs. You gave my life meaning to be honest and showed me a way to express myself and I truly thank you for that. It would be my dream to play with you one day and possibly tour with you in the future. Thank you for everything.
    Sincerely,
    James Thomas”
    That’s it. That’s why it’s worth it.
Hey James, if you write songs anything like you write letters, I’ll be opening for you some day."

This dude is much cooler than most people give him credit for.

This dude is much cooler than most people give him credit for.

he's really not man. he's got an ego that needs to be stroked constantly. im sure when he read that letter one of the first things he thought was 'i cant wait to post this on my blog'. he has flashes of being cool amongst days of being a big wanker. my opinion though.

he's still in my top 10 favorite artists.

i always thought he was a cool guy...yea he got a little d-bagish here and there but it never bothered me.

I will say that I saw him for the 4th time this summer and I was mostly bored (the chick that was with me HUGE mayer fan was also bored). I really enjoyed the other times I saw him, but this time it was probably due to not liking the new album much....Split Screen Sadness tease was the highlight of the show along with Good Love Is On The Way and Gravity...and I high fived him

also... i'm pretty sure he DIDN'T quite Twitter. in fact, he's using it more than ever.

he said he wasn't talking in public anymore after the playboy mishap then said he would use a blog site instead of twitter... but ended up just posting links to his blog on twitter, which really felt more like a "i'm getting paid to use this site, so yeah, check me out here." but then he realized he wasn't getting read as much and no response compared to twitter, so he started twitting again more. now, couple days ago, he conceded defeat saying he had half a million followers on twitter but couldn't touch 10k on his blog even after plugging it for 3 months on twitter.

I did get to Vultures live when John Mayer Trio was at Crossroads this year and it was fucking awesome. I am glad to see he is going to focus on making real music. Continuum was so damn good, I just don't get how he didn't understand that he had a formula that was really working for him.

Let's hope this is the case. He really impressed me with Continuum...and then went back to mediocrity with Battle Studies.

If he's playing what he wants - that's fine; he can and should do that. But I feel like he's wasting talent.
