I'm telling you, if you put in the soft earplugs before you go to sleep, you will be off to la la land (not the movie) and won't wake up until your alarm goes off. Has worked for me for over a year and I sleep great now.

but can't you then hear your own heartbeat? like I mean I've used a fan for the white noise that I've needed for sleep literally as far back as I can remember, and I like to often listen to radio plays on my mp3 player once I get in bed but before I'd fall asleep. But there's certain kinds of earphones I won't get because whatever it is about how they work, they amplify the inner sounds of my body too much. I genuinely can hear my heartbeat and, maybe oddly enough, that is NOT a good "white noise" sound for me.
