A certain faction of people were mad he wasn't Asian, and Finn didn't help by engaging these people on twitter. I'm not sure that the people who are upset are even aware he's white in the comics (and casting Asians in martial arts rolls is progress for some reason).

Also advanced reviewers only saw about the first 6 episodes, and the second half of the season is much better than the first. If they keep building up this character in the Defenders and I'm sure it will get a 2nd season then people will retroactively look back at this and say "it wasn't so bad".
