DM3MD on eBay

Came across this the other day...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Martin-Guita...#ht_2259wt_962

Not on the market to buy one, but is the sunburst one legit? I never heard of them making one in sunburst and was wondering if any were made that way or if it was modded after market.

Re: DM3MD on eBay

Dave used that quite a bit during the caravan this summer. In fact, if you purchased the DMB 2012 calender the month of february has a great picture of Dave playing the sunburst model.

I bought the Taylor 914 DMSM last year and absolutely love it. Also think it is a superior guitar.

Dave didn't play a Martin once on the Caravan this summer. The sunburst he used was a Rockbridge.

I wish he still played a Martin in the full band setting.

Re: DM3MD on eBay

So...anyone know if any of these were made with a sunburst finish, or if this was an after market hack job?

I've never seen a DM3MD in a sunburst...

I actually saw that, but was curious as to whether the one he got is this same one currently for sale, and if it was modified after purchase. I find it hard to believe they'd make just one in sunburst, especially since by all accounts Dave himself doesn't have one.

ahh, i see. for things like this, i would always just contact the company. when i've had questions, like for d'addario or elixer or taylor or takamine, they've always been very understanding and willing to help me with my pursuit of knowledge. let me know if you ask martin; i'd love to hear what's up with that guitar. :thumbsup

Contacted Martin today for the hell of it. Got this response in just a few hours:

Good Afternoon,

Thank you for contacting Martin. I don’t see that any were built with a sunburst top. If you have any other questions let me know.

Looks like that one on eBay was altered after market. Damn shame to know that someone fucked with that guitar.

I am fairly certain that a "few" were Sunburst.

How many I don't know.

I saw one at a local guitar shop a few years ago.

I would agree with this somewhat.

The 100/200 series are crappy for the money IMO.

300 ain't much better for a lot more $.

914s are incredible.

i love the 714, and i do love the lower ends. i have a 214, and it does the job i need it too. im not a professional musician so im not expecting 6000 dollars worth of greatness.

I am a big fan on the 400 series.

They sound fantastic IMO.

I'm not saying they are bad guitars.

I just think you can get more for your money.

What are the back and sides made of on the Limited ?

If it's done correctly it won't effect the sound AT ALL. But yes it will definitely lower the retail value years down the road. That said, I'd much rather have someone refinish a DM3 and play it, compared to 50%+ percent of guitar collectors that buy it, keep it in the box and don't play it until the value really goes up and they sell it a few years before the die, to put it bluntly.

taylor >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> martin

I highly, highly disagree. Martin has been the standard for guitars for centuries. I know it's opinion so neither on of use can win this debate but it's not even a question for me about which is better. To my ears Martin's sound so much better. The only time i'd go with a Taylor is if I wanted to play in a full band setting and kind of skimping out on the correct way to mic it. Just my opinion. There are almost as many Taylor enthusiast who disagree. ;)

And you want to talk about the most over priced guitar, ever, the f'ing Chet Atkins. The only reason that thing sells for 700+ rather than 150$ is because DM played it. Sad but true. I'd never down talk it when people on here try to sell it but i'm glad you got rid of that POS. :(

Re: DM3MD on eBay

There is a reason why Tim usually always plays a Martin in a d&t setting.

I've also never been a fan of buying low end Martins or Taylor's. To me you're just buying the name, not sound and tone.

It's like my friend, he bought a 700$ Takamine and then bought a 500$ Taylor...for what? The Tak sounds so much better but he wanted a Taylor. Whatever, not my money.

Back and sides are Koa. Top is Sitka. I love the look and sound of Koa, so this was a major point for me.

I have a 2011 Spring limited 414ce walnut. Unbelievable sound for the price i got it for (~1950 instead of the 2699 msrp or whatever it was..some places were selling it for 2399). i wish i held out though to sound test the spring 2011 against the fall 2011 400 series (rosewood/sitka) and the koa limiteds. the 2012 koa runs look awesome. koa will probably be my next purchase.

I honestly love the sound of this guitar. i'd love to get one to just play around on, but my taylor will always be my main play thing. i'd pay around $400 bucks for one.
