***Antsmarching.org’s Top Films of 2016***

I’m a little earlier in creating this thread when compared to last year, a little later in doing so when compared to other years. Nevertheless, it’s time for our 8th annual film poll! I know there are at least 15-20 of you who actually care. :lol

Like always, the deadline for submissions is delayed until the weekend of the Academy Awards in February so as to give users much needed time to catch up on all of the stuff they’ve been meaning to watch.

In the meantime, feel free to use this thread to discuss what you liked, what you didn’t like, what you’re most looking forward to seeing, etc.

1) Final submissions are due by noon EST on Friday, February 24, 2017. Results will be announced before the Academy Awards broadcast on February 26, 2017.

2) Votes should be PMed to me here on Ants. Please remember to number your lists in order to simplify things.

3) Lists are capped at 50, with a minimum of 10 entries necessary to be scored.

4) As a general rule of thumb, a theatrical release is eligible if it was designated as a limited release in 2016. We have A LOT of these this year. For example Silence, A Monster Calls, Hidden Figures, Live by Night, Patriots Day, The Founder, 20th Century Women, and Gold do not get wide releases until January. For our purposes, however (and those of Oscar eligibility), a limited release in December means they count. Films that only had festival screenings and no accompanying theatrical release are not similarly eligible.

Documentary features are eligible, as are HBO Original Films. Miniseries are not. Most notably for this year, O.J.: Made in America is eligible.

5) Since final submissions are not due for nearly two months, a “secret ballot” rule is almost unenforceable. I love the spirit behind it though and would ask that as the deadline gets closer, people use their best judgment and stop posting preliminary lists. We don’t want to needlessly ruin the suspense of the final results. I won’t bring this up again unless I see it being a problem in the weeks leading up to the deadline.

As a frame of reference, here are the top 10 lists for the last seven years:

2009 – WINNER: Moon
2010 – WINNER: Black Swan
2011 – WINNER: Drive
2012 – WINNER: Silver Linings Playbook
2013 – WINNER: 12 Years a Slave
2014 – WINNER: Gone Girl
2015 – WINNER: Room

And just like the last four years, we'll also be polling Favorite Male Performance (Lead AND Supporting), Favorite Female Performance (Lead AND Supporting), Favorite Director, and Favorite Screenplay (Adapted OR Original).

Anyone interested should submit a list of their top 3 to 5 in each category, and then I'll attempt to reveal the winners contemporaneously with the Oscars broadcast.

I only saw like 6 movies this year, so I won't be voting in this one.

That's what the next 8 weeks are for. Even if you're only able to watch one per week on average, you'll be well above the minimum list length.

I've seen a fuck ton of (mostly bad) movies this year. Really excited to start getting into the late year good stuff.

I've see more than the minimum requirement, but I feel like this year has been filled with disappointment after disappointment, so I don't think I have enough movies worthy to fill the minimum requirement as of right now. :shrug

I think I still prefer it to last year. It's been mostly downhill since a tremendous 2014 though.

Re: ***Antsmarching.org’s Top Films of 2016***

I think only one movie from my current top ten would make it into last year's top ten. So I'm not stoked on this year so far at all.

edit: Maybe two.

January and February are usually when I watch all the Oscar hopeful stuff though, so we'll see how that pans out.

I've yet to see that one gem that I always rank #1 that no one else sees though, which is sad. :lol

I just looked at it, and if I were to do top 10 from the last two years it would be an equal 5-5 split.

I saw Blazing Saddles and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory when Gene Wilder died. Will those be eligible this year? :P

Of the 48 I've now seen, 19 of them are rated an 80 or above on my Criticker account. I only have one film rated at a 90 or above though.

You misunderstand. My relief is attune to a super villain being appreciative that his archnemesis is still alive so he can continue to inflict pain upon her.
