I just felt like they forced that stuff into the show to make it seem less nerdy. Maybe they lifted the dialogue right out of the source material, but it just didn't feel right. The dialogue in Sopranos, the Wire, and Deadwood was definitely more crude, but it flowed better, because they always talked like that.

EDIT: I think it can and probably will get better. In the pilot of the Wire, Rawls drops the N-word, which is totally out of character for every cop in the show. Maybe the creepy blond guy won't be telling his sister he'd let 40k people fuck her ever again.

I think that's probably true. I don't ever remember seeing so much boobage in a pilot episode. And you're right, the profanity did seem a little out of place, because you don't expect it in a the typical medieval times setting that we saw. They either need to commit to it or drop it.

And that was the line of the episode.

Just got through the 1st episode. Really liking it so far. HBO never fails to deliver.

Not the Dire Wolf! :SOB:

I really like this show so far. It can be intense at times, but maybe that's what makes it so good.

I also am very much into this show. It feels like they are building up to some fantastic things to come. Still trying to figure out how the wall will come into play later on in the series.

I'd almost guarantee you that the novels are far better.

If I read them on a Kindle...does that count?

As my avatar indicates, I get really amped up for Sunday evenings because of this show. I find myself re-watching the previous episodes numerous times just to hold myself over.

How long after the episode aires do they usually get online to download? I want to watch this tonight instead of tomorrow, but I don't have HBO :shrug

It just gets on my nerves when people say, "I love this show," as if the story was original.

I don't think that's the case at all. While I've yet to read the novels, I'm sure I could appreciate both bodies of work in their own right. Reading the source material has never prevented me from enjoying a faithful cinematic or television adaptation. From those people I know who have read the novels, there is very good reason to be excited about the show because thus far it is equally badass.

To me it's like overhearing the conversation:
"All Along the Watchtower is such an amazing song! I love the line "the wind begins to howl."
"You know that's actually a song by Bob Dylan, right?"
"Who?"

It just sounds like the person saying it assumes that the achievement belongs to the person who made the adaptation, whereas that is not the case.

Likewise, it pisses me off when people refer to the Lord of the Rings "trilogy". I just don't understand how someone can be a Song of Ice and Fire fan without having read even one book. Just me I guess.

I certainly understand where you're coming from. At the same time, I assume that the show's high quality is a direct correlation of the novels' high quality. They're not mutually exclusive and even without having read them, I give the novels their due credit. George R.R. Martin's direct involvement with the show displays that not only will the show be very accurate but also that he appreciates what the creators are doing. If it earns his stamp of approval, I don't see why it shouldn't earn everyone else's.

In response to your last point, I have been a fan of A Song of Ice and Fire for three weeks now...since the first episode aired. Because of how much I like the show, I am going to go back and read the novels at some point. I suspect that many other people will do the same. That type of exposure is a great thing, and countless people will now take an interest in a literary series that they might not have known anything about beforehand. It's win-win.

If I have one complaint, its that the glut of characters makes every episode feel like its plodding along an inch at a time.

Last night's episode was well-written and acted. But I feel like Im learning nothing of consequence. Forward momentum is agonizingly slow. That's fine in the overall arc of the series, because a larger story needs told. But it's killer when watching on a week to week basis.

holy mother of god, you need to calm down. I said "I love the show" and you think it's some kind of afront to the book (or books? honestly have no idea).

Keep watching. Everything you're learning will come to fruition. :)

EDIT: Peter Dinklage has been awesome as Tyrion Lannister, no? Spot on casting right thur.

Preface: I have not read any books in the series.

Does anyone think that we are going to get flashbacks? There is so much back story that they have eluded to but not shown. I'm desperate to get some scenes of what happened 17 years prior.

^^me too, for sure. But I decided I would hold off and watch this series on HBO first before starting up on the books. I figure that before HBO gets into the 2nd season (which I'm assuming is based on the 2nd book?) I'll have caught up and surpassed the story line by then.

I want to start reading the books too. The thing is, I'm not sure where I want to find out the story - in the show or in the books. Books are usually better, but it's fun to watch the show and be excited for a new episode...

Sorry :o I decided I'm going to use HBO to discover the story of the first book, then I'll read the rest.

My thoughts exactly. I was tempted to buy the book the other day, but then I didn't want to spoil the books.

Re: A Game of Thrones (HBO Series)

I just downloaded the third book for my Kindle... I can't stop!

Those of you watching the series first, there's nothing wrong with that IMO. So many characters are introduced that it's hard to keep them all straight sometimes, so when the series began after I was almost through with the first book, it was nice to put some faces to characters, also satisfying to see many of them looking much like I imagined they would.

However, don't let seeing the series hold you back from the books! As is often the case, you get so much more detail and insight from reading than you do from the screen and I would highly recommend them. This is coming from a guy whose experience with fantasy novels goes only as far as Lord of the Rings.

All in all, I think the adaptation to screen has been very well done. I'm interested in seeing how they handle things as the storyline develops.

Seeing things like the bolded, is making my anticipation for this series go through the stratosphere. It's killing me not getting the books and diving into the whole series, but I'm gonna resist and just watch first.
