NBA 2011/2012 Season

A tentative agreement has been reached.

Season will start with a triple header on Christmas.

Per Adrian Wojnarowski:

The players will have to reform the union, and the 450-plus players will still have to ratify a deal to make it official. Nothing can start until the agreement is signed, which means free agency-trades could still be 10-12 days away. Training camp comes next.

Is this all based on one anonymous source, or is there more weight to this? Because that's all espn says right now.

Story broke by all the big name NBA writers, but Stern has confirmed it himself. According to Howard Beck of the New York times:

Free agency and training camps set to start simultaneously on Dec. 9, Stern says.

Stern and Hunter are having a joint press conference right now. Since nothing was expected to come of this there's no live video anywhere. Best source is the writers on twitter.

They said on Sports Center the plan is still for that 66 game season.

Yeah I just saw the Stern quote on SC. Hallelujah. Can't wait to pick through the details in the next few days.

Really hope this all ends up being legit and there are not last minute hurdles they have to overcome. I can def live with a 66 game season.

I'm guessing this means the trigger for 51 has been made more realistic. That was the hold up the first time.

Players accepted 49-51 band, sources say..b-list issues (draft, sge limit, drug testing) to be discussed tomorrow

All of this amazing considering..

Amazing. Several of the NBA's Labor Relations Committee members went to bed believing there would be no deal after Kessler called into room.

The only minor detail revealed so far, aside from the band, has been:

Silver says deal will largely prevent the high-spending teams from competing in the free-agent market like they have in the past.

The original opening day schedule -- BOS-NYK, MIA-DAL, CHI-LAL -- will likely remain so on Christmas Day.

That's going to be such a good opening day of basketball.

Re: NBA 2011/2012 Season

Chris Broussard is on Sports Center right now. He said neither side is really happy with the deal. That negotiators involved in the deal think that's a good thing. Meaning both sides made compromises.

He said if you had to name a winner it be the owners because the players made most of the concessions. Brossard said it doesn't mean much because at the time the last lockout was considered an over whelming victory by the owners, but now they can't even operate under that system.

Not sure how tied in Granger is, but he's claiming they'll vote soon. Which doesn't make sense to me since they'll finish up the smaller details the next 2 weeks.

dgranger33 Danny Granger
I'm pretty sure the vote will happen either tomorrow or sunday...let's all pray this turns out well

Re: NBA 2011/2012 Season

Saw another update on SC. So current key things:

- Training camp and free agency start Dec. 9th
- Christmas triple header will kick off the season
- 49-51 BRI band
- 10 year agreement (both sides can opt out after 6)
- Owners must spend 75% of salary cap in first two years of deal. They must spent 90% year 3 and on.

Re: NBA 2011/2012 Season

Chris Sheridan claiming these are some of the details that got the deal done.

http://sheridanhoops.com/2011/11/26/...ement-details/
  • On the financial split, the players will receive between 49 and 51 percent of revenues, depending on annual growth. The players had complained prior to Saturday that the owners’ previous offer effectively limited them to 50.2 percent of revenues, but the source said 51 percent was now reasonably achievable with robust growth.
  • Owners dropped their insistence on what would have been known as the Carmelo Anthony rule, preventing teams from executing extend-and-trade deals similar to the one that sent Anthony from the Denver Nuggets to the New York Knicks last season. This means that if Dwight Howard, Deron Williams and Chris Paul want to leverage their way out of Orlando, New Jersey and New Orleans, they will still be eligible to sign four-year extensions with their current teams before being immediately traded elsewhere.
  • Teams above the salary cap will be able to offer four-year mid-level exception contracts to free agents each season. Previously, owners were asking that teams be limited to offering a four-year deal one year, a three-year deal the next, then four, then three, etc.
  • The rookie salary scale and veteran minimum salaries will stay the same as they were last season. Owners had been seeking 12 percent cuts.
  • Qualifying offers to restricted free agents will become “significantly” improved. The sides had already agreed to reduce the time for a team to match an offer to a restricted free agent from 7 days to 3.
  • A new $2.5 million exception will be available to teams that go blow the salary cap, then use all of their cap room to sign free agents. Once they are back above the cap, they will be able to use the new exception instead of being limited to filling out their rosters with players on minimum contracts.
  • The prohibition on luxury tax-paying teams from executing sign-and-trade deals was loosened, although the freedom to execute those types of deals will still be limited.

God this is the most beautiful thread I've seen since the start of the 2011-2012 NFL Season thread. Knicks best team!!

And whoever it was that said neither side is happy is a good thing is right IMO. Although according to Sheridan and Broussard I don't really see what the owners gave up other than probably changing the BRI band. They have the sign-and-extend clause in there, they have modified sign-and-trade rules, MLE stayed the same for tax paying/non tax paying teams. Whatever, I don't care. WE HAVE BASKETBALL!! Tentatively.
