Life's Too Short (Ricky Gervais' 3rd series, starring Warwick Davis)

Well actually it's Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's third series together, but trying to keep the thread title trim. This follows the excellent The Office and then Extras. The first episode premiered tonight on BBC2, it doesn't hit the states here for awhile (on HBO, I believe) but of course it's already out there on the torrents, I'm downloading as I type.

They're each sort of playing broader versions of themselves, it's centralized on Davis plugging away with his career as a dwarf actor in Hollywood. It follows the fake documentary style as The Office, and there will be several celebrity cameos like in Extras. There's already been several clips released online, including a hilarious scene with Johnny Deep "angry" at Gervais over his Golden Globe comments.

Finished the pilot, and it did get me to tears at some points. I guess the only thing I'm worried about is, they've taken the concept from Extras where Ricky had the worst agent in the world, well it's the same exact thing here with Warwick having the worst accountant in the world. And particularly in Extras' 2nd series, it got so over the top stupid with how the agent was, it actually took me out of the show somewhat, because the guy was so brainless, I don't care how guilty you feel as the client, you would've sacked this guy at some point. And I just hope it doesn't get to that degree with the accountant here.

Don't know if anyone else has been seeking this out, but I regret to say I wouldn't exactly at this point be recommending it. It's now 5 episodes in, and after the first 3 being overall funny and fairly to pretty good, the last 2 have been downright awful. Thing is, this fake version of Warwick Davis, it's pretty much EXACTLY David Brent all over again. It's simply watching Brent but as a mildly famous dwarf. He's incredibly selfish, arrogant, clueless and a prick. So desperate to be liked and seen as successful. and it's gotten old real quick.

Plus the situations he's been in have gotten increasingly absurd for how so far outside reality they'd possibly be, past the point of actually being funny.

this just started up on HBO. seriously side splitting scene with Liam Neeson. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

Yeah I agree...and I love Ricky. But now I think he should stick to podcasts and movies, unless he can come up with something truly original for a TV show.

Blaahhhh watching the pilot now. Its only funny when Steve and Ricky are on screen. Neeson was very funny too.

Other than that its the same old same old. The small guy is trying to channel Ricky and its not funny.

the 2nd episode was funnier altogether. The Star Wars wedding killed me, and so did Johnny Depp

Re: Life's Too Short (Ricky Gervais' 3rd series, starring Warwick Davis)

Off to the usual TV torrent sites to find this. Hadn't even heard Gervais and Merchant were working on a third show, but I loved Extras, probably as much as the UK original of The Office. Besides the hilarious use of celebrities as caricatures of themselves, I thought, particularly in the second series, which is where it reached more than a level of parody and got to a commentary on popular culture embracing the least common denominator, was really sharp (and the celebrity work was great, too. There are few things I've found funnier than Kate Winslet in a nun's habit, saying "Get 'round here soon because I'm fudding meself and bloody loving it"). Don't know anything about this one's central premise outside of the posts here, but I'll definitely check it out.

My god the episode this week killed me. When the kid in the wheelchair rolled up I lost it. this show is so cruel that it's hilarious. I don't know how Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant get away with this stuff

Absolutely love this show.

Warwick in the teddy bear costume for the wedding had me dying

Re: Life's Too Short (Ricky Gervais' 3rd series, starring Warwick Davis)

So it's just been made official there will be no 2nd full series on this (not a shocker far as I'm concerned), but they are going to create a one-off special to end it, much like what they did for The Office and Extras.

Re: Life's Too Short (Ricky Gervais' 3rd series, starring Warwick Davis)

Did all of you guys actually watch the WHOLE series? I can't believe you didn't find it repetitive and annoying by the last couple of episodes, it genuinely stuns me. and with how much Davis was just Brent-light.

btw in other news from this general universe, Merchant is working on an HBO series called Hello Ladies. I don't know exactly what it'll be, if like a sitcom form of his stand up act or what, because that's the title of the solo stage show he did last year. But either way I'll certainly look forward to it.

I had kinda wondered if it was by design that Merchant didn't seem to be involved at all in the 3rd series of Idiot Abroad. Not that he had to do a ton in the first two, but still

I'm not surprised. I couldn't take any more after the first couple episodes. Didn't really find it too funny (outside of that Neeson scene)..
